I don't think it does that anymore. Older versions did though.

And put itself in the system tray and want to be the default player for every format known to man... Quicktime is as bad as realplayer.

Yeah the system tray thing is annoying but is easily removed in the settings. As for the file format issue you just click No when it asks you. Windows Media Player also wants to play for everything.

I've got 6.3 and it does. IIRC, that was the last version before they included iTunes, so I avoided it from then on. I notice, however, that they now offer the 7.1 player without iTunes. I may have to have a look at it some time.

Did anyone see the Mac OS X v10.5 (Leopard) demo on WWDC2006? If not, you should. Go to apple.com where there is a link to the QuickTime video. I wonder if Microsoft would develop something like TimeMachine in Vista. EDIT: Here is the link to the Leopard demo screenshot[^]

OSX is cool, but there are some much stuff that needs to be de-activated to have a streamlined and optimized OS! first thing I will do if when I upgrade to Leopard, is to disabled all that new junk, on an non-intel PowerwBook, all those new features are taking too much CPU time. TimeMachine looks interresting, only because it can works per application.

you are correct on both your points. -- it is human nature for us to whine-whine-whine. what would we do if we didn't have anything to whine-whine-whine about ??

You don't see a WTF in spawning hundreds of threads ?? Or using code found on places like codeproject.com in production applications ... Code that is most likely untested, or barely test, more often than not, not made by reputable developers/development groups/etc ?? .... Wow ...

It already exists in Windows Server 2003, where it's called Volume Shadow Copies, and if your XP machine is connected to a network share on a Server 2003 machine where the feature is enabled, you can manage previous versions of files. In Windows Vista, it's enabled by default, and there's a Previous Versions button in Explorer which lets you see and manipulate previous versions of a file or folder.

You can search for a deleted contact in your address book and Vista/2003 searches the correct previous version of the address book file ? No. It doesn't exist in Vista/2003.

And then it tries to take over your entire machine. I don't remember asking QuickTime to play MP3's or MPEG's inside my browser window. I really appreciate it taking 10 times longer than it used to to play a music file, though.

I forgot to deselect a couple of associations when I installed it initially. Later on when I realized that for some reason all my MP3 files in firefox were played using stupid builtin quicktime plugin I tried to delete associations, it did nothing. I completely uninstalled it and now every time there is embedded audio in the page it gives me an error. Fvsk quicktime, fvsk apple... I will not be installing anything apple on my machine anymore. The only good it is for is playing movie trailers from apple.com anyway so not a huge loss. And what's funny, the reason I installed it last time to watch a couple of movie trailers, but guess what, it didn't work, the sound stuttered like crazy so I couldn't hear anything.

I think your problem comes from Firefox. Firefox uses his own file associations database, and Firefox sometimes forgets to refresh its file associations database when something changes in your system. Try it with IE or Opera to be sure. I think Quicktime has nothing to do with that. ;)

I should install Vista before commenting, but... From a technical standpoint, TimeMachine isn't terribly impressive. It's the UI that makes it interesting. Remember, MS has included system-wide full text search capabilities in Windows for years, but due to a poor UI it got little attention until Spotlight and Google Desktop came on the scene. Similarly, i still encounter surprise when i talk about the ability to create hardlinks and reparse points, even though those have been available since Win2k. But maybe Vista gets it right. We'll see...

This is off topic, but nothing new for me ;) There is one thing in the GUI I hate with Macs, it is the multiple column selection with scroll bars such as in the top of this: http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/macosxleopard/0608wwdc/source/automator.html[^] I would prefer a simple tree control instead of select one column, to then select the next column, to next select.... Seems like GUI alpha .001...
