With handheld iPods streaming video, mobile phones recording video, independent companies going to space and robots that would be insulted by the very term "robot", it seems that we are all moving right next door to George and Spacely. What do you think?

I think we don't have roast chicken dinners that come from a pill that spent 2 seconds in a microwave. :)

Other than some offers to send your ashes into orbit, and a handful of launches for *extremely* expensive satellites, I don't see this amounting to squat at the moment. This is still at the mostly vaporware stage.

Such as? There is a not, that I am aware of, a single consumer level "robot" that does anything approaching human-like tasks with human-like movements. The closest you've got are some experimental walkers from some of the Japanese companies (Honda?). But they sure aren't anything that you'd mistake for human:) Of course there's RealDoll, but those have other uses.... Just my, admittedly grumpy, $0.02 :)

It's that robotic vacuum cleaner. If they could only teach it to cook, it would be complete.

Well looking on the site I see: "By the end of the decade, Virgin Galactic - the most exciting development in the story of modern space history - is planning to make it possible for almost anyone to visit the final frontier at an affordable price." and "What do we think the experience of sub-orbital space tourism with Virgin Galactic will be like?" So if their target is sub-orbital flight, then yeah I *might* see that happening in 10 years, maybe. But some of the hurdles I would expect would be pretty problematic (like flight safety). Plus, can they really keep a business running doing this? I would expect flights to be *insanely* expensive. But maybe this will encourage others! It seems to me that there needs to be a "killer app" for space, but I don't see this as it.

My grandfather is convinced he's married to Rachel Ray. When we asked him to prove it, he turned on her show, and pointed out that she was wearing the ring he bought for her in Europe. (I should mention that he's currently in a nursing home, and will only watch the Food Network)

You say I need to get out more, my baby's mama said I need to pay more child support, my stockbroker wants me to diversify, my coach wants more wrist, my caddy wants me to use my shoulders more, and my wife wants me home more. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Anyway, totally off topic, I'm thinking of starting a blog for every combination of those who suffer with obsessive-compulsive disord, ADD, manic-depression and bipolar. It should be pretty cool, each letter in my blog will have a unique font color and size. I'll keep you posted on the launch date. ETA May 2013.

IIRC they're currently targeting a $200k pricepoint. Still well above the average persons vacation, but reachable for a professional/executive who really does want to go (ie willing to take a 2nd morgage). Far cheaper than what russia has charged for a mir vacation: $20m. IMO there really is a need for something between virgin galactics pricepoint and the $3kish that some company in florida is charging for rides on thier copy of the Vomit Commet (nasa's parabola flying zeroG trainer).

Hmmm, $200k is a lot lower than I would have expected. I wonder how much of a jump the cost would make if the sub orbital restriction were lifted.
