AutoCAD to PDF Convertor
-
Has anybody seen/written a free utility to convert AutoCAD drawings to a .pdf format? The boss has me making drawings using AutoCAD 2006 LT, but now he wants to email them to others who may not have access to AutoCAD. I know there are some shareware and commercial products for this, but it would be much more 'cost-effective' to find a freebie.:-D Barring that, I know the .dwf alternate format used by AutoCAD is publicly available. If the format for .pdf files is similarly available, I suppose I could write one. Suggestions, anyone?

Not sure of the quality, but isn't there free PrintToPDF apps out there? Sits on your machine as a printer, but outputs whatever it is sent as a PDF.

The only free way I know is to install a postscript driver (available from Adobe for free), or use the or psout command in AutoCAD (don't know if LT 2006 has this). Then use GSView and GhostScript to convert the postscript file to a PDF. Not sure if this is the easiest free way, but it's certainly one way of doing it. Cheers, Drew.

If not, you could always write it out as PostScript. Plenty of tools out there that'll help you to take it from .ps to .pdf.

.dwf? Never heard of that format. You mean .dxf? DXF files are just plain ASCII AFAIK and most programs can import them, even Word I seem to remember. I don't know about ACAD 2006 but ACAD 2000 will let you export to stuff like emf and so on. Also since ACAD supports printing () you could download CutePDF which looks is a PDF generator that looks like a printer (like Distiller), and you can simply print to that. I know this is possible because I've just done it ;P. Might take a while to configure it properly though to look presentable.

It's tedious and somewhat cruel, most matches ending in a draw as no participant is able to find anything helpful. - Shog9 Ed

I was just thinking about writing a dwf viewer using VCF.

Weird, the Force must be strong in you, because just after I posted to Mike, I thought wouldn't it be cool if someone wrote a viewer for this using the VCF!

CutePDF has a PDF writer that uses Ghostscript to generate PDF's. It is free. http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp[^] In the Download page download BOTH the Convertor.exe and the Writer and install them. DO NOT INSTALL THE COMPANION VERSION (it is an adware version). Just download the version on the left side. This version has no adware or other popups. It will create a PDF driver in the Windows Printer folder and you just select it when you want to make a plot. You can plot from envelopes to full E-size drawings. I use it all the time for Engineering designs for my client. Regards, David -- modified at 19:34 Wednesday 23rd August, 2006

SolidWorks rocks. :) I have used many other CAE packages over the years and none can beat it's combination of power and usability. -- modified at 21:24 Wednesday 23rd August, 2006

Yo, Try DXF Sharp Viewer, a cheap shareware product I wrote, see http://www.woutware.com/dxfsharpviewer.html[^]. It can convert DXF to PDF, PS and SVG amongst others. The PDF format is indeed open, but I think you'll be busy for quite a while writing a decent converter! Excuse the plug :)

I can second that. It seems every bit as good as PDF995, but without the adverts. :)

I tried to answer individually, but I can't get anything to post when I do; just "server not found" errors. There's some great suggestions here, and I appreciate it!:-D
