What an awesome movie! I wonder why it was so quietly promoted, it's right up there with some of the best movies I've ever seen. Out on Video now, I strongly recommend it, it's a good story, well acted and nothing like I imagined it would be before I saw it.
I agree. I HIGHLY recommend this movie. One of the best films I have ever seem. Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith fame) and Natalie Portman (Star Wars) do a fantastic job in this movie but so do all the other characters. I especially love the character that John Hurt portrays, Chancellor Adam Sutler. This is IMHO both a must see and a must own movie. I also recommend that you make your children watch it. I found that it can stimulate some interesting conversation amongst younger people. I wish they would show it in schools.

You are aware that it is based on a graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, aren't you? I highly recommend it, if you like comic books. Wikipedia article about the 'V for Vendetta' graphic novel[^]

I wanted to see it very much actually. Than I heard through the grapevine that it's really just a means of sending yet another political message (left-wing so I heard) and I lost interest. Of course, seeing that I know jack about politics this may not seem to be the case for me. And, I'm still curious though. And believe me folks, I have zero desire to turn this into a left vs. right debate.

It's certainly political - but it's more of an archetypal story than contemporary political commentary. It's a retelling of a British graphic novel by the same name, I believe. It's a good story, and the acting & direction are well done. I'd recommend watching it. It's a good flick!

The portrayal of The Gov't is... a bit heavy-handed. It's a fascist, homosexual-persecuting, religion-wielding, single-party system. I started out thinking it was supposed to be a caricature of something, but if it was supposed to be, it failed. Which is a pity. IMHO, the character of V is great. They could have gone in two directions - make him into an eloquent "freedom fighter", or make him into a Don Quixote. At different points in the movie, they seem to try both... and amazingly, it works! Evey is perfect as both his Sancho and as his love interest. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to have the energy to invest in fleshing out the rest of the characters. If you've ever read any of Alan Moore's comix before, you'll start recognizing one of his trademarks before too long: a character will be introduced, given a lovingly-detailed back story, and then never used again, while another will appear in nearly every scene but never even given realistic dialog. This kinda works in a comic book, where character development is more of an optional feature at best... not so much in a movie though. But the worst part for me was the lack of attention given the leader of The Gov't: how you take a character so obviously ruthless, so obviously power-hungry, deviously clever, and vain... and end up making him so irrelevant to the story that you barely notice when he dies? The movie was entertaining, and absolutely beautiful. But it has some serious problems. Think... "Matrix 3" with better actors.

Oh yeah, it's really great. And it shows what a big difference a good director can do when it comes to the actor's performance (I'm thinking about Portman and her acting in the SW-saga compared to this one).

If there is any political genesis for this movie I suspect it was the Thatcher era in the UK judging by the age of the original illustrated novel but it's really more about the characters and the story and it's very well made, all the qualifications for a very good movie. It's not a vehicle to promote a political agenda.

What I find really ironic is that you are probably being voted down by some ignorant with extreme political views who has *heard* something about the movie being left wing and thinks it's all yet another seditious plot of some kind, when in fact we're talking about an anti fascism movie if we were to give it any kind of political slant. Or maybe they are just objecting to children watching what can be a pretty intense movie at times and we all know we must protect our children at all costs from anything that could provoke them to think under any circumstances about anything more important that what they are going to wear to school this year. ;)

Spot on Rohde! I was thinking the exact same thing while I was watching it. I haven't seen Portman in anything else other than star wars and I was thinking "where did this acting ability come from?". Poor George Lucas he really should have left Star Wars as it was and left us all with good memories instead of churning out all the truly horrible "prequels".

Group of us planned to go watch the movie on one of those gigantic screens. Eventually only 2 of us turned up. This is the mail i sent out to the rest :laugh: To those who missed the Movie-- OMG!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???????????????? What an awesomely cool movie to watch,in IMAX, at a low price of 100/ticket this was a steal!!!! You'll simply have to watch this fan-fxXXX-tastic movie!!!!! it blew me away!!! Directed by the Wachowski bros(of Matrix fame) and Joel Silver, Hugo Weaving aka V (Agent Smith of Matrix) will dazzle you!! The movie is brilliant/captivating/gripping from start to finish--the script perfect--dialoge delivery impeccable--cinematograpy flawless this movie is going into my all-time fav list and will rank highly up there!! 2Thumbs UP!!! ***** !!!!! 10/10 !!!!!! Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate.
