I had an idea for a website, which is almost as cool as the pussy farm linked to earlier today. Lots of people want to travel, and it seems to me that a lot of student types want to travel, but to experience a country as it is, not as it's hotels present it. I propose a website that allows people from around the world to meet, on the basis that people who go there either have a desire to travel, or have a spare room they are willing to let out for a fee that is considerably less than what a hotel would charge. People can meet online, decide who they can trust, leave feedback when they return from their journey, etc. What does everyone think ? Am I losing my mind, or could I strike it rich ? Christian The tragedy of cyberspace - that so much can travel so far, and yet mean so little. "But there isn't a whole lot out there that pisses me off more than someone leaving my code looking like they leaned on the keyboard and prayed that it would compile. - Jamie Hale, 17/4/2002

I've read about such a thing, although not web-based. As a way of promoting Esperanto, the language, some people have organized just what you mentioned. if you speak, you register and then can travel anywhere in the world and stay with another speaker, and you get to host a limited number of guests from other countries in return. http://user.online.be/walkme/travespo.html#anchor contactEN has some more info... // Rock

All kind of weirdos and maniacs are going to thrive on such a site. They wouldn't mind offering their rooms to some naive girls and boys from other countries. Then you'll get all kind of "Come stay with me. I am 20, single male. I'll show you my country the way you'll never forget *wink* *wink*." or "Free room to a traveler from Afghanistan in exchange for delivery of a small package..."

A couple of months ago I saw an article on A Current Affair. There was a bloke from Switzerland (??) who set up a web site asking people to put him up in their houses for free. He ended getting sponsors who have been paying for all his airfares. He has been travelling for almost a year and has enough offers set up to have him going for another 5 years. Bludger pays for nothing as the hosts actually feed him. Oh, Ok, How about getting an International Travel Agency Deal where you get to clip the ticket. (so to speak) That way you offer all the services as a package. I think the standard is 10% of ticket price, but this varies a lot, and there are house rules etc. Regardz Colin J Davies

That's a great idea. I like to travel and I usually prefer youth hostels and campings to hotels not only for low prices, but also because you can meet more people and see "real" places (I think that hotels looks all the same :)). I also like to go on not very turistic places (I've been in the north of spain last summer and it's a great place), and sometimes find an accomodation is not so simple. It would be great if your website will allow people to print a list of all the accomodations of a country/region (sometimes it's difficult to do that from youth hostels websites) to bring that with you and being able to change your "path" at any time. It would be nice also to provide to the travellers a way to "rate" accomodation (like you can review books on amazon :)). If you need help for your "budget traveller's" site, I'll be happy to help you (even if I prefer C++ to ASP stuff :)). -- Looking for a new screen-saver? Try FOYD: http://digilander.iol.it/FOYD
