Electricity good...power outage bad!

I'm taking a couple of weeks off before starting my new job. I've been spending my days sleeping in, watching Judge Judy, reading and cross stitching. This afternoon at 2pm the power went out. After 20 minutes I finally called the electrical company. We were having wicked storms and as soon as the power went out I heard the fire trucks so i figured lightning struck something...important. After TWO HOURS I called the company back as since we had no power and it was still raining like crazy I was afraid that the well with the sump pump would overflow. Plus my birds stay in the basement and were freaking out with no light. I get the standard "they're working on it." After FOUR HOURS of reading, word finds and brushing the cats I decided I better go get candles as I was starting to get a bit dark. Of course the power went back on sometime after I left. At least I didn't have to eat cold beefaroni from a can. It's been storming all night still. I think Boomer (cat number one) is afraid of thunder. For the last fortnight he's been hiding out in the guest room and depositing hair all over the new comforter. But all day he hung out with me on the couch. That long of time you realize how much you depend on electricity. i thought, hey I have a laptop! Whoops, wireless internet. That's not running. Can't watch tv, dvd's, listen to music...I thought about starting drinking but at 2pm that seemed a little extreme for not being in Europe. So I pose the question, what is the longest you have gone without electricity? What did you miss most? internet? tv?

I technically haven't heard from Gateway yet. When I interviewed they made it sound like I already had the job. The guy was like, 'you'll be sitting next to me..." He said he'd make a decision by today (Friday) but I don't know if the storms caused a glitch in the approval process. I know they are running a background check because they had a third party get some info from me. I have accepted with the company that is over an hour away, but after speaking with Gateway if they have a comperable offer I think I might take that. Although the company has its stablity issues, the job is more up my alley. Apprarently when they fired everyone some of their processes are all screwed up. (Imagine that!) They need someone to come in, clean up databases, streamline procesess and such. Sound really fun to me.

I remember working customer service at Citibank during that. I remember reversing late fees because of that. Was your house in danger?

Got within a mile of here. Evacuating was scary and the news media misinforming people sure didn't help the matters any. Had a client of mine lose his home office and 2/3 of his business operations. He went through a ton of crap just to get his life back upto speed and his business, too. We all are still looking for the arsonist who started it.

It was winter either 11 or 12 years ago when the power went out during a blizzard. It was out for a couple days and what I missed most was heat. The fireplace was nice, but it was not enough to keep the whole house warm. 10 years ago I started my own chicken farm (wow, 10 years already:omg:) so now I have a diesel generator and the longest I have been without power since is about 30 seconds.

I've had the power go out at my house about ten times in the last month. Yesterday it went out twice. I think it's nearby construction combined with rain. The most annoying part is discovering that my UPS battery has passed its expiration date.

I think 6 or 7 hours, but it was night so I didn't even notice that. It was when we had a nation-wide blackout: the whole Italy with no power. Nice. In Milan, where I live, the problems were fixed before the morning, but in other places the blackout lasted for say 3 days. During the day, I guess a couple of hours in summer 2003 when the wheather was incredibly hot (at least for this place), so the power was not enought to run all the air conditioners and the power company decided to cut power in some zones of the city alternatively (I'm not joking).

About three months, immediately after the war in 2003. After that and till now, we have it for 1-2 hours every 6 hours or so. What I missed most is internet...and airconditioning during summer (btw, in iraq summer is not 4 months, the hot weather starts from April till Oct.).

Five or six days - I forget. We had 9' of snow on March 19th, much later than normal. The roads department had let the diesel tanks run dry for the year, so there was no way to run the plows to clear the roads. Without roads, the power company couldn't get up the mountain, and the diesel trucks couldn't deliver. The power company (SCE) helicoptered teams onto the mountain to start repairing lines downed by snow and ice, and the townspeople fed them and housed them. It took 10 days in all to get the road open. We got by with a blazing fire, reading stories by oil lamp, and generally putzing around enjoying the heck out of being stuck away from work. TV has never been important, and there was no such thing as an Internet to miss (though I could do online banking via a 300 baud modem when we had power). My roommates' kids and I spent most of the time playing in the snow and doing crafts in front of the fireplace, along with some music and story-telling. In all, it was one of the nicest times in my life.:-D

Really? The earliest I have ever started drinking was 08.00 (am).

Couple of years ago a big storm blew though town and knocked power out for 24hrs. Unlike my neighbors I still had lights, radio / Alarm clock. I just plugged the essentials into the UPS. Oh and the next day it still plenty of juice to check Email (oddly DSL service never dropped, after I plugged the DSL router into the UPS).
I'd love to help, but unfortunatley I have prior commitments monitoring the length of my grass. :Andrew Bleakley:
