    Some file installed itself on my machine. I can't delete it. Windows Explorer crashes when I hit delete, or right click. Only for that file. The only signifigant thing I can say is that it has an extremely long name. I tried to rename it to a shorter name but it wouldn't let me do that either. It doesn't seem to be a virus. It doesn't do anything. How do I delete an undeleteable file. :wtf: Why not throw away a dime? I throw away ten pennies all the time.

      Wouldn't happen to be the MSN Shortcut, would it? I have tried extensively to remove this from many computers. It seems Microsoft has other plans in mind.

        I had this happen to me once in Win2K - I just popped open a dos shell, CD'd into the dir with the offending file and then did a "del a*", where 'a' was the first leter of the file (or if you need to, type in more characters to make sure you delete just the right file - eg: del thisfile*) That fixed the problem for me, but I dunno if it will for you. In WinXP I had a similar problem a few times now, but not the same fix - it was remedied each time, strangely enough, after closing the WinAmp Agent tray icon (even though WinAmp had zero zilch and nada to do with the offending file). not sure if either of these will fix your particular problem, but it can't hurt to just try. : Dean 'Karnatos' Michaud

            If it's the same problem I had once, the problem is that the filename plus the directory structure is too long. Go to one of the underlying folers and rename it. Then delete the file. I believe this is the only thing that will work.

              The right click crashing sound like it is down to a bad Explorer extension ( I know I have blown up explorer many times. Actually a right click handler I done in another app brought a clients network to its knees, but thats another story). Try removing any extensions in the registry and restart explorer. Or you could just put a massive electro-magnet against your hard-disk, I'm sure that would delete the file. :wtf: if(E_NOINTERFACE == pThat->QueryInterface(IID_IUnknown,(void**)&pUnk)) { // I aint no pUnk bitch! }

                  if you have a Win9X boot disk handy and your drive is not NTFS, boot from floppy, and then delete the file. This at leat ensures that the OS isn't trying to do anything with it when you delete it. And if your system fails to come up after doing this, don't forget about safe mode. :-O Otherwise, try formatting and doing a new install. That solves most Windows problems that rebooting won't solve. :-D :-D No generalization is 100% true. Not even this one.
