Hello, Which antivirus software would you recommend to an enterprise with 20-30 computers? And why? PS: This is not my homework, neither a programming question, and I don't announce anything, I'm thinking on buying a new antivirus system and wanted to get impressions on people that could have needed to take this decision before and that would like to share their results. I'll second the eTrust recommendation. It's small, unintrusive and uses very little CPU. On top of that, when I bought my latest copy, CA messed up my rebate. I sent an email and was given top notch customer service. (Compare this to McAfee; they released a buggy version about four years ago. When I complained, I was basically told to go to hell, there was no bug and to stop bothering them. Of course, the next release listed the very bug I'd complained about as one that was fixed [which they actually hadn't.] By the end, their software was causing so many problems on my computer, I removed it. Then there's Norton. I used it on my work systems at my last job and it didn't cause a problem. Right after dumping McAfee, I tried it at home and it caused endless problems to the point where it rendered my computer unbootable [I eventually had to pull the hard drive, install it as a second drive on another system. I then backed up some files I needed onto CDR and then reformatted it there.] After that, I went back to CA [which I'd been using for years before switching to McAfee] and have been happy since.) I should add that I use AVG on my second system. I find it a little clunky and that it uses more resources than eTrust and it drives my wife and kids crazy with the ugly update screens--they kept freaking out until I convinced them it wasn't finding viruses, but updating. I believe AVG is free, though, only for home use.

There are more than the antivirus softwares that I know there, so now I have more doubts than before! X| Well I was only joking, but I'll have to take a look at them.c Thank you.

Most of them offer free evaluations - so you can try them out before deciding which one to buy.

Almost anything except S***mantec. I use and recommend AVG. Regards, Phil

We use CA ETrus, the only thing I really know and like about it is that I can easily disable it when programming and it allows the user to filter out folders and extensions from scanning. The only downside is it seems to be a major hassle to get the subscription updated every year, but that's not my department so all I can say is once I year I have to take an extended coffee break while it's being renewed / installed.

Stay far, far, far away from anything labeled Symantec/Norton. Especially Norton Internet Security. I have never ever witnessed anything crappier than that. It slows down your computer - even if you deactivate it. It ignores your rule sets (works like a charm, until next reboot - the software says the rules are still active). It treats you like a dumbass and locks down the computer from yourself. It may do weird things with your email, resulting in outlook not being able to send to some recipients if you have a firewall between you and the net - without saying anything - outlook just stops working. It sometimes, randomly, locks down your network shares, eventhough you've told it to stay out of it - no error messages - clients will just fail to connect. There are more bugs in that piece of software, than there are features. It's more a virus/line cutter, than it is an anti-virus/firewall application. Someone ought to sue Symantec for fraud!

Personally I've been using, and installing for clients, ClamWin (available over at sourceforge.net). Works great, unobtrusive and low-weight on the resources/cpu department. They also have the fastest response time of anyone in real world measurements when a new virus if found in the wild which is important here as I handle file libraries. Lastly, I can set it up so it's completely transparent to the user save the case where they only have intermittent connection to the 'net and then it complains a lot about not having access to check versioning and updates.
Best of all, free.
