I was being sarcastic about being an expert just because I saw a show. ****Colin Davies wrote: I think most parents have been embarassed to admit to people that they have/had a maph. I'm not a father (I might think differently if I was), but it appeals to my sense of humour. Just imagine the stunned silence and awkwardness that would follow this: "So is it a boy or a girl?" "Well, you're not going to believe this, but it's a hermaphrodite." I could say it with a straight face, but the trouble is most of my friends would just think I was joking. :) "There is a fine line between lunacy and genius; it is my goal in life to keep them guessing just where the line lies..." -- Unknown

The best medical text I've found on this subject is An Open Letter to Physicians by Sarah Seton M.D, which discusses a range of things related to gender that can go wrong during fetal development, including gender dysphoria (transexualism), and intersex conditions (including hermaphrodism). It's pretty fascinating and thought provoking stuff (although I find the preamble a little naff). Having said that, I have a bit of a vested interest in understanding this. ;) FYI: this particular article quotes a figure of 1 in 10,000 for intersex conditions, which seems to fit with the declared number of TS people (6000) in the UK (how many more are hiding, I wonder). I hope you find this useful. Anna :rose:

Yeah, thats a good simplistic text, to explain stuff to the average doctor :-) I hadn't heard that Dominican Republic stuff before. The whole issue is not as clear cut as many people believe, and I really believe has hardly been investigated yet. I believe there is some form of a fear factor in the medical community to dealing with these issues. Anna :) wrote: FYI: this particular article quotes a figure of 1 in 10,000 for intersex conditions, Yeah, I still think they are guessing or they would say 1 in 12492 with an error of 1% or something. Transexuals probably have to be taken on a case by case analysis. And in many cases will never be happy with the outcome. But then nobody is perfect. :) Regardz Colin J Davies

I believe there is some form of a fear factor in the medical community to dealing with these issues. The Dominican Republic cases are pretty striking aren't they? I thing you're right about the fear. There is still a lot of discomfort about these conditions in society - probably because gender is so fundamental to our perception of ourselves and others. When we question it, we question ourselves in a way many people aren't at all ready for. Nevertheless, things are better than they were only a few years ago. I've been stunned by the support I've received from friends - when I started talking about how I felt I expected to meet disbelief and hostility, but the reaction I've had has been quite the opposite. I was recently surprised to discover that the British Government has had a Parliamentary Forum on Transsexuality since 1994 now, and it's beginning to show in British Law - e.g. discrimination on grounds of gender identity has been illegal in the UK since 1999. ****Colin Davies wrote: Yeah, I still think they are guessing or they would say 1 in 12492 with an error of 1% or something. Until someone does a massive survey the figure is going to be just a guestimate. I think it will always be a guess, since these conditions are so traumatic and sensitive to parents that collecting reliable statistics is going to be very difficult. This is aggrivated by the fact that some conditions don't become apparent until years later. It's reasonable to assume though that the occurance of TS conditions is greater than that of intersex, since it appears to be a lesser disorder (though it sure doesn't feel like it!). In the UK the largest support organisation for Transsexuals (The Gender Trust) has around 5,000 members. In a country of 60 million people, that's about 1 in 12,000 (assuming of course that all members are transsexual - which is true in the most cases). When you consider that there are other support groups in the UK, and that not all TS people join such groups the number
