Moped or Motorbike?
-
Does anyone here have a moped or motorbike? I'm in the UK and I'm considering buying either a moped or motorbike for commuting to work each day. I already have a full driving licence, so if I get a moped I won't need to take any further tests but I will look like a 16-year-old yob. So I'm also thinking about getting a more manly motorbike. I know nothing about bikes. What is your advice when it comes to selecting a bike/moped? What makes should I avoid/which are good? This is supposed to be a cost saving exercise as an alternative for buying a second car (my wife is expecting our second child and so she will need the car every day). What do you think?

If you want to ride a Moped you need to take Compulsory Basic Training, you can then ride the bike with L plates. However you either have to take a test or re-do the training within two years. Having said that one of my colleagues here does the Didsbury to Manchester city centre comute on a moped (That's where the info on the CBT and test came from!) and it's the fastest way taking him about twenty minutes each way, and not a lot slower in bad weather. The only problem he's had is that the steering lock on his moped was broken when burglars attempted to steal the bike. But using a big chain and not putting the steering lock on (after having it repaired) has sorted that out.

Er? If you are 16 and drive down the road shouting abuse at people, perhaps. Anyway, get a 125. You can use it for 2 years on a car license, which gives you plenty of time to get a bike license.

I ride a bike, but recently took it in for a service and they lent me a 125cc scooter, they're much more fun that I thought, very nippy the two-strokes, great brakes (disks), good round corners, ideal for commuting I would have thought. Watch it you've got bad wind though ;-) as small wheels mean scooters get blown about much more than motorbikes.

I don't have one, but I've been thinking about getting one myself. If you don't want to look like a 16-year old pimple-faced brat just get one with a more cool and retro look like a Piaggio scooter.
Don't forget the fishtail parka and the Jam blasting out :-D

Nah, go with Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14R[^]

I would rather recommend the 2006 Ninja 650R[^]. It's what I have[^], and is a pretty good starter bike... powerful enough to get you where you want to go, but not too crazy powerful. I also have a 1977 Honda CB400F[^]. That is also a good starter bike, and they also seem to be relatively popular in England.
