Just me or is Firefox leaking memory like a firehose?

I'm running the latest firefox - 5 tabs up at the moment: 3 at codeproject (yes, I am addicted), one at sourceforge, and the last at a t-short place (long story). In the time it has taken to type this query - about 2 minutes - firefox has grown by 1mb in mem usage. Do you Firefox users see the same thing? On the weekends, I'll leave my laptop up the entire time - Firefox grows to almost 200MB. As for IE7, ewwwwwww. I upgraded from 6.0, and it crashes more now...

IE 7 uses even more memory per tab open then FF... FF could be consuming memory due to a site using a refresh on you maybe inside an IFrame... Haven't seen an unexplainable leak yet but even though I use FF I still think it is a piece of junk.

Try Flashblock[^]. Flash is a bit of a pig, but unfortunately it's used all over the place now for ads. Flashblock lets you click to load animations that you really want, while blocking them by default.

I've noticed that IE 7 went from 26mb of memory usage to 66mb for only three tabs, and didn't want to give any back when tabs were closed. FF doesn't grow as fast when I do three tabs visiting the same sites, and it gives some of the memory back after a while on my machines.

I've loaded an extension on one of my systems to report if there are any scripts on a site that don't clean up properly as the page is unloaded and it does pop up a warning for some of the CP pages. I haven't had a chance to look into it, but it might be part of the problem.

Is that going to block all of the cool CP ads? :) I really like Firefox - though it leaks, it is far more stable than IE7. I upgrade IE7 on a whim based on security issues. So, I allegedly have a more secure browser, but it is flakey and a bloated pig. Such is life...:^)

Some of them. You just get a big icon in their place, so you can always click it if you want to see the ad. I'm not trying to be dumping on ads or ad-supported sites, but Flash has... problems. Especially in Firefox.

Yes. And the memory leak is a commonly reported problem in FF. There is also an argument that it's not a leak but a feature. Another argument is that it's caused by extensions.

It is still a Beta. Though, as it's very close to release this is somewhat disconcerting!

A sad thing is that one cannot find a really good web browser on Windows platform. Opera is good but too many sites don't support it; IE is insecure and unstable; FF is a memory-leaking bloatware...

Never had any crashes with it, but do get slowdowns when sometimes switching tabs. heh, ever notice how many different reviews M$ products get? for some its nerly perfect, for others its a reason to reboot the computer....

JWood - are you being sarcastic/funny? If you are, haha, but if you are not, Lord no, I don't work for MS, and I certainly am not plugging one browser over another... they all have their warts. I was just astonished at how much memory was leaking from FF. As for IE7, well, IE has been crashing for me since 5.x, so it isn't anything new. And IE *does* consume HUGE amounts of memory... simple observations -- ymmv.

Whether it is linked to extensions or not, the problem is with Firefox itself. It shouldn't allow bad things to happen to a users system. After all, isn't that the whole problem with Internet Explorer?

Firefox works great for me. I upgraded to 2.0 RC1. BTW, the memory leaks in Firefox depends upon what kind of extensions you installed.

I only have Dom Inspector and FFClickOnce installed and I still get a leak but it still uses less memory then IE 7. So I just take the good with the bad and have IE 7 around for MS specific stuff like OWA, Project Server and Sharepoint...
