Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Dennis Hastert brushed aside any suggestion of resignation on Tuesday as House Republican leaders struggled to contain the fallout from an election-year scandal involving sexually explicit messages from a disgraced lawmaker to underage male pages.[^] Ah, the wonders of technology. Don't these pedophiles like Foley and their enablers like Hastert realize that electronic communication leaves a trail?

I think it is the dems who should be most concerned abuut that. There is no evidence that Hastert or any of the republicans were aware of the sexually explicite instant messages. All they were aware of were the far more tame e-mails, which they did confront Foley on and forced him to discontinue emailing the pages. Someone was hanging on to the IMs to gain maximum political damage, and I'm pretty sure it was not the Republicans. Lets just see where the investigation leads. At least Republicans have the decency to resign after being exposed as sexual perverts - look up Gerry Studds sometime.

    Thank God for disproportional force.

When a Republican sends instant messages (but does nothing physical) to a page, the entire Republican party is expected to resign. When a Democrat actually has sex with an underaged page, he's pardoned by the Democrats! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Reynolds[^]

oh get over it. if the org structure for every failed politician had to fall on their sword we'd be living in anarchy. if anyone is to be criticized, other than Foley, it should be ABC who was more worried about impacting an election than it was in protecting the pages. GOP leadership got rid of the guy the minute they were made aware of the problem.

Defending the defenders of pedophiles. You must have a membership with NAMBLA.

Wrong. They knew about the e-mails for months.

That's a lame excuse. The e-mails should have set off warning bells to anyone, except those whose sole concern is remaining in power.

Perhaps you should actually read the articles you link to: "Mel Reynolds served his entire 5 year sentence on the original sex charges, but after 3 1/2 years of Reynold's 6 1/2 year bank fraud sentence, U.S. President Bill Clinton commuted the bank fraud sentence."

As usual, this is all democrat dirty tricks. This could have all come out months ago, but that would have given the Republicans time to get someone else's name on the ticket in Foley's district. As it is now, his name has to remain in place. The real scandal is that this has apparently beomce the only way dems have of winning elections. How proud you must be.

Oh yes! That's a VERY important detail! Oh, and you left out this little diddy:

Despite the charges, he continued his campaign and was re-elected in November
of 2004. Reynolds initially denied the charges, which he claimed were racially
motivated. On August 22, 1995 he was convicted on 12 counts of sexual assault,
obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography. He resigned his seat
                  on October 1, 1995.

So he continued running as a Democrat (thereby meaning he was supported by the Democratic Party), refused to resign and...Was even reelected!

How? Hastert, et al, openly admit they saw and responded to the e-mails. The issue is not about the e-mails. It is about the instant messages - who had those? Some of them are three years old. Have democrat operatives been hanging on to information that could have been used to protect these children just for their own political advantage?

Yeah, real harsh. They left him as co-chair of the Missing and Exploited Childrens Caucus(the irony!). They didn't investigate and discover that he had corresponded with other pages.

What should they have done? There was no evidence the man had done anything aside from asking a former page for a picture. There is no evidence Foley has ever physically molested or exploited a child in his life. Should congress go on a witch hunt against every member who is a suspected homosexual and speaks with a page? ARe you saying that homosexuals should not be allowed on certain committees? What would you be saying now if the Republicans had done that?

Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Dennis Hastert brushed aside any suggestion of resignation on Tuesday as House Republican leaders struggled to contain the fallout from an election-year scandal involving sexually explicit messages from a disgraced lawmaker to underage male pages.[^] Ah, the wonders of technology. Don't these pedophiles like Foley and their enablers like Hastert realize that electronic communication leaves a trail?

I'm sure when they do, they'll just slip an appendix on a unrelated bill to make it illegal to use as evidence.

Isn't IM sex molestation and/or exploitation? Foley had mutual masturbation sessions online with at least one page.

And he resigned over it...And yet you seem to think that somehow it's OK for a Democrat to have actually sex with an underage page and get re-elected under the official Democratic ticket. Double-standard? Naaahhhhh...
