Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Dennis Hastert brushed aside any suggestion of resignation on Tuesday as House Republican leaders struggled to contain the fallout from an election-year scandal involving sexually explicit messages from a disgraced lawmaker to underage male pages.[^] Ah, the wonders of technology. Don't these pedophiles like Foley and their enablers like Hastert realize that electronic communication leaves a trail?

I only vaguely know about this because I went to CNN to find out about the Amish school shooting. Otherwise, the only connection I'd make with Denny is that the pope eats at Dennys.

Isn't IM sex molestation and/or exploitation? Foley had mutual masturbation sessions online with at least one page.

It certainly isn't physical contact. But, apparently, the republicans had no evidence of even that behavior because the democrats were setting on top of the evidence in order to spring it as another of their dirty little October surprises. I wonder how many more of these political charades we can expect before november?

      Thank God for disproportional force.

Ummmm... Foley is slime because the page was underage not because the page was male.

But that isn't the point. The point is should members of congress who are homosexual not be allowed to have conversations with pages regardless of their age or gender? Is taht what the republicans should have done when they learned of the emails? Should they now review the emails and IM's of each homosexual member of congress? Is that the plan?

Where did you get this from? I've re-read the thread and nobody has mentioned this. Also pages come in both male and female varieties - so segregating homosexuals would be pointless. I repeat: This is not a homosexual issue - it's an age issue and a sexual harrasment issue since a page is subordinate to a congressman.

That is what I am implying. Speaker Denny Hastert has years of experience at covering up others sexual abuse, so he could be elected pope.

Of course not, but who else could have had it? Apparently this was first reported by ABC news. Where did they suddenly turn up the IMs from? Who keeps copies of IM's for three years? Did some ISP just suddenly find old copies by accident? Did some 16 year old page keep them in order to embarrass himself later in life? Something really stinks about all of this. Like I say, lets wait for the investigation and see what gets turned up. If Hastert is responsible for a cover up, that I will be the first to say he should resign.

But they only thing they had on Foley was that he was a suspected homosexual and he sent an email to a former, underage, page. That was supposed to be enough for the republican leadership to force him to resign. If that isn't what the above anti-republican posts are suggesting, than what are they suggesting? What should Hastert have done about Foley based on the information he has stated he had? My question remains, if that was supposed to be enough to condemn Foley and force him to resign, should it be extended to all suspected homosexuals based on the fact that they might have emailed pages? If not, how can anyone condemn Hastert and the repblican congressional leadership for not being more harse with Foley?

I haven't condemned anyone except Foley. As for the Ed's condemnation of Hastert and your support of the GOP leadership, I'd be very, VERY careful if I were you guys. It's way too early to know who knew what or when. I'd hate to hitch my horse to anyone this soon.

I agree with that completely. But, again, this is all working out too convienietly for the dems for it to not be a planned, staged and choreograph political hit. If the republicans were dumb enough to get caught in the act, than to hell with them. We'll just fall back, reload, and hit 'em again.

After ABC ran the story, former pages and others sent further emails and the IMs. Had Fox News or the other conservative outlets that refused to run the story done so, they would likely have received the same material. There is also a blog that is collecting all sorts of material.

The House of Representatives server administrator? But he would have to know what to look for, so perhaps pages contacted him. Also, the NSA keeps an extensive database of Internet traffic. But there again, you'd need to know what to look for.

True, but so far it looks like all the stink is emanating from Foley, with some of it swirling around Hastert.

I haven't condemned anyone except Foley. As for the Ed's condemnation of Hastert and your support of the GOP leadership, I'd be very, VERY careful if I were you guys. It's way too early to know who knew what or when. I'd hate to hitch my horse to anyone this soon.

I think Hastert is going down on this one. Even if he doesn't, he'll do major damage to the cause by fighting and making it linger in the press. Boehner, Reynolds and other republick leaders are already distancing themselves from Hastert. They're ready to throw him to the wolves, and Denny seems too dense or too power-hungry to see the damage he'll cause by sticking around.

Meh, these are politicians... they'd throw their mother to the wolves if their 'advisors' told them to.

I think it is the dems who should be most concerned abuut that. There is no evidence that Hastert or any of the republicans were aware of the sexually explicite instant messages. All they were aware of were the far more tame e-mails, which they did confront Foley on and forced him to discontinue emailing the pages. Someone was hanging on to the IMs to gain maximum political damage, and I'm pretty sure it was not the Republicans. Lets just see where the investigation leads. At least Republicans have the decency to resign after being exposed as sexual perverts - look up Gerry Studds sometime.

                                      Thank God for disproportional force.

But unlikely. Unfortunately, you don't reach national office through honesty. And it's not always because politicians are liars. Most of the time it's because voters want to hear lies.

Update. Don't know if you caught this. Let's see if Fordham falls on his sword for the good of the party or seeks revenge against Hastert. People familiar with Fordham's side of the story, however, said Fordham was being used as a scapegoat by Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.[^]
