Actually the current definition of "fundamentalism" was adopted pretty much universally by Christians until leftists decided that religion and science were incompatible throughout the last century. Instead of religion dying per their plans, a philosophical war began.

Fully clothed statues. Basically all I can say about this is that it sounds like a small bit of the story. I've been to Texas numerous time, have friends and family who live there and this doesn't fit with anybody I've ever met there. I suspect that there's some element not revealed. Like maybe it wasn't just a nude statue, but was suggestive in some sort of way. Maybe the teacher made some lewd comments. Maybe the teacher just sucked and they were looking for an excuse to can her. I think the story, as it stands, is ludicrous...So ludicrous that I don't buy it at face value.

I didn't think we had more than our share of bible thumping prudes, but we at least have a good amount. I happily repeat it for you: The parents had signed permission slips allowing their children to take part in the field trip. The parents didn't bother to make an informed decision (which would admittedly be hard), but instead of taking responsibility for their mistake, they blame someone else. But of course, for you everything is Government vs. The Man.

I also live in Texas very close to Frisco (a very upscale suburb of Dallas) and all I can think of is that it was a holy-roller Baptist who complained. Some of the Baptists (not all) are total flame-outs when it comes to sense and sensibilities. Maybe they thought the kids were going to see "Walt Disney" art. Anyone who's been in Texas long enough knows that the Dallas Art Museum is one of the best. Too bad there was ONE narrow-minded idiot to spoil it all for everyone else. As an example, I had some neighbors (Baptists) who told their kids that drinking beer would kill them! So when they see a grown-up drinking a beer, they assume that person is now going to die. Sadly, these kids were also home-schooled. Maybe the parent(s) who complained should think about that as an option.

They've already fired the teacher - that sure sounds as if the investigation is over and the sentence has been handed down. IMO - When it comes to public schools and their local school boards there isn't much that should EVER be kept private.

Well Deep Ellum and the West End are basically tourist areas but I spend quite a bit of weekend time on Greenville. Its only 8 min from my house - straight down Peavy to White Rock where Peavy deadend into Mockingbird to Greenvile right where the old Dr Pepper plant used to be. Good resturants and music but its a younger crowd than I like on lower Greenvile so I usually end up listening to Jazz or going to plays at the other end . BTW my message was really satire as we Texans like our fun in spades. If I were you however I would stay away from any of the afore mentioned spots this weekend - the Texas OU crowd can get pretty messy real quick Richard

Well Deep Ellum and the West End are basically tourist areas but I spend quite a bit of weekend time on Greenville. Its only 8 min from my house - straight down Peavy to White Rock where Peavy deadend into Mockingbird to Greenvile right where the old Dr Pepper plant used to be. Good resturants and music but its a younger crowd than I like on lower Greenvile so I usually end up listening to Jazz or going to plays at the other end . I more or less grew up in the area, still own a home in Garland. I left in '89. Prio to that, Greenville Avenue was wild and wooly. Lost of small (and rough) bars / clubs and strip joints. "Dandy" Don Meredith used to train on Greenville Avenue Saturday nights before the Sunday game. One of the cooest places back then was a bar called the "Cave". They had a floating 30 minute happy hour, during which tap beer was $ 0.05 a glass. Around that time I was going through a divorce and the beer was a great deal. The Deep Ellum reference also pre-dates '89. I had some really wild times there. After hours bars and some really wild clubs. The was a great burger joint, Adairs.
