Ahh! I am having extreme difficulty sending e-mail all of a sudden. Whenever I send the e-mail to the SMTP server (mail.btinternet.com, not my own), I instantly get the following message in return:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

      Subject:	...
      Sent:	...

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

      'Name Here' on ...
            550 relaying to < person@company.com > prohibited by administrator

 This happened once yesterday, but today is is happening nearly everytime today (but some are still getting through). AFAIK I haven't changed anything, and BTo haven't told me of any changes (and they say their service is fine). What does this error emssage mean? I have tried looking on the MSKB, but as you all know, unless you know the exact ID for the article you want beforehand, you are not going to find it. ____________________ David Wulff There was a young man called Dave, Who dug up a prositutes grave, She was mouldy as shìt, And missing a tit, But look at the money he saved. i get that sometimes from my ISP. when i get it, it's because the my ISP has a POP-before-SMTP system set up where you have to log in and check your email (via POP) before you can attempt to send (via SMTP). this way, only people with accounts can use the server for sending - anyone else is assumed to be using the server as a relay and is blocked. so, when their POP server is dead, or my login is failing for the reason d'jour, i have to login via telnet, and send them an email telling them to fix their shit. -c

Relaying Denied usually comes up when you are using the SMTP server of a different company than your current ISP. In otherwords you aren't authorized to use that SMTP server to send e-mail outside of that network, its usually used as a means to prevent spammers from using that server to send their spam. If your settings are correct (and you are dialed into BT), then as you probably know BT is blaming their problem on the customer :( James Simplicity Rules!

I guess the latter is probably close to the truth. :(( ____________________ David Wulff There was a young man called Dave, Who dug up a prositutes grave, She was mouldy as shìt, And missing a tit, But look at the money he saved. So why the hell don't Bastard Telecom tell me about these changes? I suppose I'll just have to get into the habbit of saving a draft of every message before I send it, so I can resend it again when it comes back failed, unless someone can tell me how to ensure Outlook does the recieve before the send in send and recieve. ____________________ David Wulff There was a young man called Dave, Who dug up a prositutes grave, She was mouldy as shìt, And missing a tit, But look at the money he saved. I can't stand the "POP first" policy of my email host... so, I installed my own SMTP server... http://www.postcastserver.com/ ...the best part is, it's free! This is a good solution if your on a windows box. cheers, .dave. David Hisel -- http://www.hisel.com/

Thinking about it, there are worse services. ITV digital, apparently they have started turning the channels off. Glad I never subscribed. Was thinking about it, that damn monkey almost tempted me. Giles

Its simple. Buy a £45 ADSL modem and join Pipex if you can. I finally got sick of BTOpenworld myself and did that. They only want you to THINK its a conspiracy

If life were that simple, I would do, but my local exchange will not be upgraded until (hopefully) this summer. When that fateful day comes I will be sure to post some questions in the Lounge to ask people of their exepriences with the companies I will be able to deal with, and try to get the best deal I can. Nearer the time, maybe you could lay down the pros and cons of Pipex is they will be available to me. BTopenworld have, despite all my whinning, seriously got their act together these past two months or so, and when I can get in (which seems to be first attempt touchwood at the moment) their service is great up until the 2 hour disconnect. Whether this was though pressure from the government watchdogs or their customers though is another matter all together, but I can't kick it if it works. It's when they pull stunts like this without assessing how it will affect their customers that pisses me off.
