From the article: "The production costs of a multi-layer DVD using the new NME technology are estimated to be around US9 cents, compared with the US6 cents for a standard single-layer play-back DVD" and "This 50 per cent cost increase compares" Did I just miss out on some "new" math here?

.06 (Original cost) x 1.5 (a 50% increase) = .09 (New cost) Seems pretty 'old' math to me...

Huh. And i thought the quandary was "how do we convince people to pay again for the same tired old films". I'm so naive...

But this version looks so much better on the new 279" PlasmaLCD TV you just spent $87k. Since the TV will burn out and selfdestruct in 23 months you have to get the most you can out of it now.

 I wonder how many of the current BluHD owners also possessed killer LaserDisc systems, "back in the day"...

Yeah, and let's not forget about controlling all this equipment. My in-laws just got themselves hooked up with a big-screen + receiver + cable box + DVD changer + VCR. That's a total of five remote controls! So what did the installation guy do? Buy them yet another remote control: this[^] one. It's a beautiful piece of slippery junk. Getting it to do simple things, like volume up/down, is a hit and miss. You have to be in the right screen or it just doesn't respond. Other options, like changing the DVD on the DVD changer are not available, so you have to use the DVD's remote control. I hate the thing. X| Alvaro

Do we think that the ancient Greek gods still exist? How about Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny? Of course not. There is no verifiable evidence for any supernatural guy in a red suit, magic rabbit, or gods. Just like it’s hypothetically possible for a ’57 Chevy to be orbiting Mars, some gods are also hypothetically possible, but ridiculously improbable. So, let’s be honest with ourselves and look at the world with open eyes, as it actually is. - Mark Thomas

Despite my general dislike for all things Sony, I bought a Sony RM-AX4000[^] about a year ago. I considered the Logitech Harmony remotes but settled on the Sony. Let's just say... the Sony is hardly perfect but probably a bit better than the Harmony.

The two competing specs use different portions of the disk, so the max data in either format is undiminished. Basically instead of making the player more complex to handle both as in the DVD-R vs DVD+R format war, this time it's the manufacturers that are going to be picking up the extra cost to support both.

Now all we need is a drive that can dynamically and seamlessly switch between all of the formats while reading the same disc and we'll have some real capacity at last! bwuhahahahahahahaha
