Anybody know of some simple, open source or free document management software? An application that will allow you to check in/out documents and track revisions and changes to the documents. I need something simple for a complex client and I don't want to write it as they don't want to pay me to do that. Web based would be really nice but not required.

I think Windows Sharepoint Services v3 http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/default.aspx[^] might help, it contains doc management capabilities, integrates in Office and has good APIs. Not open source, but free.

All I need is a roadmap and then I might be able to find a clue.

Looks gorgeous but it also looks commercial. You have to purchase this right? I don't see anywhere on the site that it's open source or free for small office use or anything like that...

I tend to just use source control for that stuff for personal use. I have worked with an EDMS called Centra 2000 as well, but A: it's not free and B: I wouldn't wish that pile of crap on my worst enemy.

Judging by the fact that they have 'resellers', I'd guess it'll not just be commercial, but very expensive as well...

I don't know if this quite cuts it but my friend Clive is developing Ostiary http://www.ostiary.com/[^] Could be a bit early for you though. Also check out http://contineo.sourceforge.net/[^]

When do you think he will be ready for prime time? Is he open to access control needs? (FYI right now my budget is ZERO.)

Component Software[^] do a free revision control system (not open source though and there are licensing limits). I'm not sure whether the free version would cover your needs but it might be worth a quick look. Not looked at it for a while. In my experience the interface was rather dated but the product worked quite well and you could quickly view changes in both word and excel documents (which was my main requirement at the time).

Doesn't MS Word allow change tracking? Then just use source control to track revisions of the doc.
