The US has banned Vegemite, even to the point of searching Australians for jars of the spread when they enter the country. The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite has been deemed illegal under US food laws.

I think that the article links you posted paint a biased, unfair and deceptive perspective on the issue. As an American, I can state with confidence that the contents of the spread have nothing to do with the ban. They simply needed an excuse to create more federal agencies. With this ban comes the need for people to enforce it. Soon, we'll be hearing accounts in the national news about the brave exploits of the newly created DVP (Department of Vegemite Prevention). Can't you see it, man? We're creating jobs over here! :-D

There are some stupid laws (read protectionist) here in Canada. There is some law preventing the addition of caffeine to non cola type drinks. http://mkaccdb.eu.int/cgi-bin/spsview/barrierintSPS.pl?bnumber=010019[^] That orange drink in the US with caffeine doesn't have any in the Canada version.
Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

So they're safe from terrorists carrying Vegemite? Sorry, I couldn't resist this point about the home of the corn dog.

I love Irn Bru, however, I've reduced my caffine intake to just a couple of cans a month (I tried to give up completely, but I couldn't). I wish they would release a caffine free version of Irn-Bru back in Scotland.... That reminds me... I wonder if my granny is still friends with Mrs. A. G. Barr.....

Until they've had time to train their sniffer dogs, I'd say there's a good chance you could smuggle it in; just put in a marmite jar (it's not like they would dare do a taste-test.. as if they'd know the difference anyway) :-D

This is where common sense would kick in for the enforcers (wishful thinking I know). I'd like to think no judge in their right mind would send someone to jail over something this stupid.
From news.com.au:
Kraft spokeswoman Joanna Scott said: "The (US) Food and Drug Administration doesn't allow the import of Vegemite simply because the recipe does have the addition of folic acid."
Ok, that doesn't make sense. We allow orange juice. Either she's an idiot (or the news article's author for not saying what makes this a big deal), or I smell a conspiracy in the making. :-D

I flew into the States yesterday and they never searched my bags or asked about vegemite. However, they did confiscate my half drunk see-through bottle of bottled water. The security was fully aware of how ludicrous it was with a stern "ooh - dangerous stuff that. I'm going to have to confiscate" and a big grin.
cheers, Chris Maunder

That stuff is nasty.

Phew, luckily I had a compatriot deliver a large enough supply to last me until I visit home again at the end of the year. But you can buy Vegemite here at Costplus World Market. Although I only found the tiny 2oz jars.

Also, Reagan was a Republican. Vegemite is dangerous to bring into the country because it's raw produce, and therefore subject to quarantine at customs. I think that's the real issue here, not that it's freekin nasty, which it is...

I guess that Marmite is BANNED as well, looking at the label, It also contains vitamins B, namily folate, so smuggling Vegimite in a Marmite jar may not work, It's just government trying to FORCE people to eat the right foods! So what ever happened to freedom of choice????

hahah, so strange, I live in OZ and I looooooove Vegemite. Our most popular Vegemite brand here is made by an American Company (Kraft)
