    For those who want the old behavior back: 1. Go to about:config 2. Change the value of browser.tabs.closeButtons[^] to 3 (if you want the close button to go away entirely, change it to 2) Sweet! :) Sorry if this is a repost. I just found this out.

    You can also click with the middle button on a tab in order to close it. Does not work in Linux though, unless you tweak the config.

                  Which should be on the left to allow selection of tabs. Heh, I will just re-enable mouse gestures they are better neways.
