anyone have an opinion about RentACoder or any of the other contracting sites ? i need someone to translate a help file from a .CHM WinHelp project to HtmlHelp and don't have the energy to do it myself, and don't want to spend $1000 for RoboHelp. I'm actually a little confused; .CHM is HtmlHelp in compiled form. Do you mean decompile? Or is there another format of which I'm not aware.

You just have to look out for #1, don't take the cheapest bid because it's someone doing development on a shared computer in a coffee shop 2hrs a day. Go with a respected outfit, and you will be OK.

i tried some about a year ago (same project - keeps getting put off). i never found one that would do more than 50% of the job (lost links, broken formatting, etc). if i have to go through and double-check and fix everything the converter did, i might as well do it by hand and get it right the first time... or pay someone to do it.

Helpmaker[^] is free. Try using CHM instead of HLP in a VC6.0 application. Wasn't easy at all. X|

Ah, that's good to know. The one and only time I had to convert a winhelp system to HTML help the winhelp solution was pretty small and easily converted. I would rather work with HTML help anyway...

But what is a respected outfit? Personally, I think RAC is a waste of bandwith for VC++ (or indeed, non-Web-centric) oriented developers. I mainly do 'conventional' contracting (ie turning up and sitting at a desk for x hours/week at y/hour (and if y is sufficiently large, and x is sufficiently practical, it's not that bad), but I'd also like to be able to find ad-hoc one-off jobs. Never found anything remotely suitable on RAC, and ISTR that some other denizen of these parts got ripped off doing work through them.
