Backup and restore OS

A friend has asked me to "fix" her totally messed up computer. The HDs are packed with crap and it will be easier to start fropm scratch. The thing is that she has lost the installation CD and I just don't see myself peeling the thing off one directory at a time. Is there a tool that can allow me to backup windows (W2k) _only_ so that I can reformat the HD and then restore the OS? Thanks guys.

Not that I know of, that's pretty much the same as making a copy of the OS, and that's what the CD is for. Worse, such a tool would exist in order to stop you from losing all the stuff you probably *want* to lose, to get back to a 'fresh install' state.

this might work as other way round try unstalling all other installed programs and delete the useless files (tell your friend to take backup of all important documents herself ) then delete the whole directories (which does not belong to windows) on root clean my documents /desktop delete all users quick format other drives and clean temp folders and also run disk clean up :):)

Wait February, buy a new computer. There will be Vista loaded inside, even better!

Does that really amount to a whole lot? I realize all users are different, but for my home PC, I usually only end up preserving documents, favorites, and saved games. For my work PC, it's the same plus development folders.
