Where art thou XP SP3?

I know this has been talked about to death but I still am boggled that XP SP3 isn't due till the second half of '07. I've just done two fresh installs and, after SP2, there were 87 updates required on one machine, and 77 further updates on the second machine. Add 9 months (give or take a couple) and that number will be ungainly. Grrr. I did find the Unofficial XP SP3 preview[^] though. Looks very, very scary. But kinda tempting :D

It's been pushed back until the first half of '08.
The evolution of the human genome is too important to be left to chance.

I don't think we'll be seeing SP3 for XP. The reason? simple. With MS pushing Vista, XP is the main opponent to Vista. The easiest way to make people upgrade is to stop supporting XP. Not having the SP3 come out seems like a logical step in doing that. Dont know if this argument makes sense to you, but i've already had a discussion like this with a few people(albeit in russian, and cant find the page noew ). One of them said, claiming its from reliable sources, that MS is planning to not make SP3 come out. Don't know how true it is, but usually what that person says is pretty reliable. So just my $0.02 Now, having said that, im really not looking forward to the Reign of Vista now. Dont see enough features in it that I would like, and feel much better on my XPSP2. With SP3 would be better though ;)

What you are probably going to see in a service pack rollup instead somewhere on or after the release of Vista. Frankly, MS hasn't got a choice here and it has nothing to do with the lowly consumer (peon) user out there. It has everything to do with the simple fact that there will not be either medium business or enterprise buy-in for Vista until they EOL ('End Of Life') existing machines which simply can't run Vista and have not been fully depreciated either. Should MS try to shove Vista down their throat, they will get a huge push-back which will result in one of two things. Mass law-suits due to software assurance contracts that are fundamentally worthless or mass desertions to some form of *nix. Toss-up on that prognostication but it could be a really good year for Ubuntu ;-), SLED 10 or similar solution. People that do not work or consult in this space forget that much of the OS upgrade process is tied to the depreciation cycle time. Microsoft is well aware of this economic fact, they just haven't come up with a 'solution' yet. They will. They have to.
