I'm going to buy a treadmill this weekend. I know there are some runners on the board but I don't know how much indoor running you do. Are there any brands that are good/should avoid?

Proform is pretty much the standard when it comes to home treadmills. If you are going to be using it every day for 4 or more miles, you should stay away from the sub $400 (US) treadmills as these tend to need motor and/or belt replacements frequently. If you are just going to walk a little bit every day, then you could probably do OK with one of these inexpensive models. For high-end machines I would recommend either Nautilus or Precor. True is also an OK brand as well. Regards,

My recommendation is that the air is cleaner if you walk outside.  At least, it is where I live.

Yep.  Although, I wouldn't know, it's November ( so, spring ) and it's freezing here, they had hail in town yesterday, and downpours out here.

I second Brigg's comments. Cheap treadmills are sure to fall apart long before you've worn out your shoes. Either buy an expensive one ($800+), or run outside. Precor is a good brand. The gym I used to visit before the one I'm at now, had Precor and some other brand. During the three years I trained there, the Precor was never broken. The others had to be maintained once every half year it seemed.

It's not always an option, especially so in a wintery climate. If it's not too damn cold, it can be very slippery. A broken arm doesn't make training more pleasurable. :)

I'd love to except that it's dark outside by 5pm, and the sun isn't up until 8am. I don't like running by myself in the dark. Plus, it's winter here. I know some like to run in the winter, but my lungs freeze up in the really cold dry air and I have to use an inhaler sometimes. Plus some people don't clean their sidewalks and then you can't see if the sidewalk is uneven...too much of a chance to get hurt. I figure with a treadmill I can walk/run inside from November - May (which is when we typically have snow) and that's enough months to justify the cost.

My wife told me a similar story.  The kids do play on the treadmill from time to time, which helps in clearing the cobwebs.

Have you done a lot of treadmill running? By 'a lot', I mean several weeks worth? Running on a treadmill has some distinct differences from running on roads or other surfaces. The motion of the belt interacts with your stride and gives you a different footstrike. I've found I can run on a treadmill occasionally (once every couple of weeks) and I'm OK. If I use it more often than that, it leaves my ankles sore and I start to develop shin splints. I'm striking a cautionary note here because of the expense. A good 'walking' treadmill will run $800-1200, while a 'running' treadmill starts at $1200 and up. More money usually buys a wider belt, beefier construction, and a more powerful belt motor. If what you're looking for is a source of aerobic exercise that you can use indoors when it's nasty outside, an elliptical cross trainer is a nice machine. This[^] is a sample from Precor, who seem to make the best ones available. Admittedly, this one's expensive, but you could probably find cheaper versions.

I don't like running at all during the dark. I don't know why, but I gotta have sunshine to get me pumped up for it.
