I've just bought a little dome tent, it's reflective silver on the inside of the fly sheet, a darker grey/green on the outside. With the silver inwards and the darker grey/green outwards will this still be effective for reducing heat within the tent, or should I put it inside out over the tent in hot weather so that the silver is facing outwards? I hope I'm making sense :-O

Are you talking about the little fold out tents you use at the beach for shade? I had one years ago that was silver on the inside and it worked well. How's the new place?

What's wrong with a normal tent (unless you're sleeping in the artic / antartic), I've got a Eurohike Avon for my Duke of Edinburgh supervision and so far it's proved to be very good, was the only tent out of 10 for the leaders which stayed up during a storm without guy ropes. If you are sleeping in the artic / snow then perhaps a sleeping bag like my fathers which he's had for 30 years (bit past it's prime now) but that you were supposed to use it by digging a hole in the snow for shelter, climb in the bag and climb in the whole like a grub.  Downsides of it thogh are: a) it's goosefeather so once it gets when it's knackered and since it's lost it's waterproofing you can't do the aforementioned. And b) it's too bloody hot to use as a sleeping bag in Britain, you can use it as a matress and that's about it. [edit]Re: your question, probably best to leave it where it's supposed to be, inside if that's the case[/edit]

Lol, actually quite the opposite - next week Brend is going to South America for a couple of weeks, so I'm taking our toddler, Mikey (nearly 18 months) on a road trip up along the Great Barrier Reef. It's pretty hot at this time of year, I'd like to keep him as cool (and ungrumpy  ) as possible

It's a normal tent, although I do intend to be camping on the beach somewhere around the Whitsundays this time next week :-D. The new place is great, thanks, we're loving it! Had a hailstorm yesterday, but fortunately no damage.

Actually that sounds like to composure of a heat storing structure. (It only sounds like i'm reading from an encyclopedia because I have forgotten the correct terms). The silver on the inside will keep it warm should it become could outside. Body heat should be sufficient to warm it should it be could enough outside. However it is possible to have the negative effect, and allow the cold to be trapped inside, but it is unlikely it would remain that way for long (just perform some form of exercise inside it). As for turning it inside out..... I would not recommend it for many reasons.

Then considering the climate shouldn't be too harsh you could probably put it on the outside to reflect the heat away , just do a quick evaluation of weather forecasts etc to see if you think it'll stand up to being outside, because chances are if it was to be inside then it won't be waterproof or very strong me thinks.

The people in the forum at UKcampsite.co.uk[^] will probably be able to provide you with an answer - it's where I ask most of my camping questions, and it's quite a friendly forum (but not a patch on CP :)) ChrisB

The silver reflects heat radiation from your body back in the tent keeping you warmer. A dark color absorbs more sunlight warming the tent during the day. Putting the reflective side up will cool the tent in during the day. I'm not sure how effective the silver will be at keeping heat in, but it should work well at keeping the tent cool during the day much like those reflective car window shades.
