Decent new rock acts

Geez judging by the responses there is a clear misunderstanding of what classic rock is all about. You might like "The Black Keys". But I gurantee you that you'll find stuff you like but have never heard of by using those bands as your starting point at the Music Genome Project[^]
Look into Disturbed's latest album... Ten Thousand Fists. Its not as nasty as the name makes out. Foo Fighters gets fairly rocky Linkin Park (maybe) Some Aussie bands to look up: The Living End Grinspoon Silverchair Its all fairly generic 'Rock', so please dont flame me :)

Well, I'm a middle aged rocker who grew up with acts in the 1970s/80s. My record collection is getting a little stale and I'm looking to update it. Who would you all recommend? My tastes are from the classic rockers like Purple and Led Zep, through acts like Kiss/Cooper, to AC/DC and Van Halen. Who are the wunderkinds who can compete with these pantheons of greatness?

Queensryche are cool. Empire is one of the greatest albums ever, period. Also a big fan of Dream Theater. Thing is, I like so much rock/metal that it's great to get recommendations from others.

I really like ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead[^]. You might like Masters of Reality[^] - sort of LedZeppy/Creamy band (they even had Ginger Baker as their drummer for a while). [Edit]You could also try Monster Magnet[^] [/Edit]

Well, up to, and perhaps including, the Black album. For the love of all that's holy, don't buy St. Anger. If we're going to segue into metal, then the modern bands to check out are Hammerfall, Edguy, Primar Fear, Trivium ( The Crusade sounds more like Metallica than anything Metallica did post the 80s ), Dream Evil, and so on. Masterplan is on a metal label, but it's more another most excellent modern rock band, albeit nothing like the bands I mentioned, too polished. Russell Allens Atomic Soul, on the other hand, is an excellent slice of seventies style rock.

If classic rock is your thing, you may also want to check out Queens of the Stone Age. I've always thought they sounded like they had some strong classic rock influences. And I also notice you didn't mention the 90's... if you haven't listened to bands like Stone Temple Pilots (also now part of Velvet Revolver), Pearl Jam, or Alice In Chains you should definitely do so.

that's gonna be tough. the 'classic rock' style is pretty far out of the mainstream these days. Audioslave Velvet Revolver (as mentioned above) White Stripes Wolfmother were popular for about 10 minutes a few months ago. they sound like Ozzy beating The White Stripes with the corpse of Deep Purple . i also like Marah, who sound like mid-period Stones + the Replacements. and, Soundtrack Of Our Lives, does it pretty well. though they're not exactly Rockin!, a little bit smooth. -- modified at 22:38 Monday 20th November, 2006
Wolfmother reminded me of what bad music Robert Plant would be singing if he didn't join Jimmy Page in Led Zeppelin. Plant honed his skills and learned from Page, and became a great solo artist also. Wolfmother sounds like they want to be associated with Zeppelin, but their songs are just not up to speed.

As already mentioned the White Stripes are not to be missed. Jack White's new group the Raconteurs is also good stuff. Around here we're crazy about "The Decemberists". The album Picaresque is considered one of the best albums of last year. The new one, "The Crane Wife" is even better in some ways once you develop a taste for the band. There are these amazing traces of 70's power rock like Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Genesis and late Yes in some of the pieces that are almost haunting. Some other bands we've been enjoying are "Pretty Dirty Things", "Kaiser Chiefs", "Louis XIV". Good Luck
