I just found the OnTime 2006[^] system from axosoft. I'm currently evaluating the trial, and so far it seems quite nice. Does anyone have anything bad to report about it? I love the fact that you can choose what user interface you want to use. Web or Windows GUI (I prefer rich GUIs)

I dont know anything about OnTime but I've used TestTrack (http://www.seapine.com[^]) at 3 different companies now and think it does a great job.

I tried it one and a half, maybe two years ago, and I found the GUI to be quite cluttered. I also remember that the price tag was a bit hefty.

We've been using it for well over a year now and it is great as long as the whole team is consistent at using it; that is, keeping items up-to-date and adding relevant items to projects. I love all the reports it can generate and how easy it is to filter and customize just about everything. We've even found it useful to add custom fields for certain projects. Alas, our Austrian office never got on board with it because we were hosting it here in our North American office and their slow Internet connection made it nearly unusable and so they never got on board. So if you have teams in remote offices, make sure the Internet connections are good! Recently we switched over to GForge [^] because our Austrian office decided to host it locally and GForge was "free". OnTime is a much better product in so many ways I can't even begin to describe. I will miss using OnTime. Axosoft has some great forums for support and suggestions. A lot of features requested by the user community end up in the product. As for price, I think it does start to get pricey after the 10 member team edition. But for a single developer everything is free :) Make sure whoever in your team will be using the product takes the video tour and has a live demo from one of their reps. With that demo you can ask all sorts of questions and see how things *really* work rather than just the canned video. It was this live demo that really opened our eyes to the possibilities and sold us the solution. Good luck!

Thanks for replying. When I downloaded it and tried it out, it seemed good right from the beginning. Almost too good to be true, if you know what I mean. I'm gonna take your word for it, along with having it for a spin for 30 days, and see how it works out. The price isn't much of an issue, since we'll only need the 5 user version (small shop). My biggest headache though, is that it will not integrate with CVS. I guess I'll just have to cave in and convert my repositories to Subversion...

You make that sound bad, at least your not being asked to use VSS. ;)

Well, I'm always hesitant to fix something which isn't broken. But Subversion's been around now for a while, so I'm hoping I'm not switching a working SCM to a broken one. Had I been asked to use VSS, the OneTime trial would never have been installed. :) It's been a while since I saw you around here. Been busy?

I've been swamped, we recently had a tragedy at work[^] , but I've been trying to get back to normal, including my CP lounging. :) If you are coming from CVS I think you will feel very much at home with svn, we switched to svn this summer and have been much happier since. It also made things run much smoother with the projects CruiseControl.NET monitors for us.

You switched from VSS, right? Have you ever had to convert a CVS repository? If so, was it a straight forward process, or did you have to apply a certain amount of tweakage? Last time I checked (2 years ago), it involved voodoo and perl scripts...

Yep, we had a script remove the extra junk that VSS included within project files. Our process didn't take very long, however I would recommend making a backup (for safety reasons). I seem to recall a script a while back called cvstosvn, however if memory serves me it was written in Perl, so that may be your voodoo. IMO, if you can test out your transfer against a backup, the "voodoo" could be acceptable considering it should be a one time occurance.
