Does it work through firewalls etc...? I'm sure I tried it a (long) while ago and it just wouldn't connect (but I suppose it could have been me!) Do I need to use msn with it? ChrisB.

It is sometimes blocked by firewalls, but that can be changed easily to allow a temp connection. It will work really well over the LAN (but you have to modify the request to use the LAN addy). Yuo can send 3 request types. 1. MSN (easiest) 2. Email (Medium) 3. File Request (This is what you need if you are going to edit the IP)

Does anyone have any experience with the current crop of "remote support" software? e.g. LogMeIn, goToMyPC, and the various other ones. I understand that they are based upon vnc. Does XP's "remote assistance" do the same thing? If I want to provide occasional support to one other computer (computers at both ends are behind standard firewalls), does anyone have any recommendations for some remote software. I want to be able to controls the user remote PC, and have the user see what I'm doing. I'd also prefer not to pay a monthly subscription :) (but a one-off cost or free would be fine). Ta ChrisB

Thanks, I remember reading about that on JoelOnSoftware when it was released. It does seem quite pricey. I think I'll test out the windows remote assistance first. ChrisB

I use VNC. It's free, and it works through firewalls. I call my dad, he starts the vnc server and gives me his IP, and I login. When I'm done, I shut his vnc server down.

My 2 cents... Somebody on here mentioned LogMeIn about a month ago. I tried it, like it, and use the free account. The free account is somewhat limited but fits my needs.

In case it is of interest, stay tuned for our products (vGrid-OS, secured shells, .net remoting inf, etc.) based on our VPN technology for remote communication, assistance and control. Remote support: The windows remote assistance thing needs the firewall at the other end to be opened and port forwarded to the correct PC if you're trying to do it over the internet. Not so good for users that don't know what a firewall is. In the end I used copilot[^] because I don't need it that often, and it's fairly cheap. Chris.
