I also have not had any problems installing XP pro from scratch, but it really messed up things when I did an upgrade. The login, start menu and other explorer items took about 30 seconds to respond and I had allready disconnected all network resources. As for drivers (at least storage) I found that if the hardware does not have an XP driver just use the Win2k driver and ignore the warning that the driver has not been certified. John

This will normally work fine... except for modem drivers... or so I've come to believe from giving tech support to ISP users. Somethign to do with win2k and winXP handleing L2TP connections differently.

I had one problem with XP... well 2. First off, the bastards didn't support my 1992 ISA ethernet card!!!! Second, I had a new drive as the master on the first IDE controller. I had my old W2K drive as the slave on that controller. To MY TOTAL SHOCK, XP made my new XP drive E: and kept my W2K drive a C:. I ended up reinstalling XP with the W2K drive disconnected. Tim Smith I know what you're thinking punk, you're thinking did he spell check this document? Well, to tell you the truth I kinda forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this here's CodeProject, the most powerful forums in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question, Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk?

In my experience, Windows will give priority to legit volumes and partitions when automatically assigning drive letters. What I do if I do not have another util is create a partition and then restart the install so it assigns them correctly. But, be warned, the Windows installer only creates extended partitions -- which are slower. Jeremy L. Falcon "If you eat the cookie..." Homepage : Sonork = 100.16311

Especially if your old system has 95, 98, or Me on it. Back up your data or put it on a different disk parition, and do a fresh install. Many times 2000 drivers will work with XP, but NT and 9X drivers won't. No generalization is 100% true. Not even this one.

As others have mentioned, DO NOT do the upgrade - do a fresh install. Also, take note of *every* piece of hardware on your system and check the Windows Harware Catalogue to see if XP supports it. -- Russell Morris "WOW! Chocolate - half price!" - Homer Simpson, while in the land of chocolate.

I have heard rumors that sacrificing a goat helps too...

...If anyone knows any mojo dances or incantations they can do to make everything 'ok' it would be appreciated. If so I'd appreciate a copy of them them too. Maybe it would help me actually get onto the system on which I tried to upgrade from Win89 to XP Pro (not leaving a 98 partition) I now cannot get past the "Log on to Windows" screen. It does not recognise my user name/password combo (which I did not change) to log onto the local machine and finds cannot find the domain to log onto the LAN. Any incantations for that particular problem? Steve T.

I've never had any problems with XP but I'm sure Nish might have a few words and a lot of other CPians seem to have some severe headaches because of this latest OS... Which reminds me. Anybody know if there is a sign of a SP for XP? :-O

I am actually in good terms once again with XP. I've re-installed XP once again. It was the RAM last time, though I found it easy to blame it on XP. Nish
