and which country are you in? Our asian customers seem to be crazy about it, but almost noone else does. (Our chinese distributor even asked if we could completely switch to RAR so they don't have to repackage archive :omg: )

I use it to transfer archives through our corporate firewall. I encrypt the message, turn on the "encrypt filenames" so the firewall doesn't strip the archive because it contains restricted file-types (EXE, BAT, CMD, PIF, etc) and then phone the customer and tell them the password. Often the company I'm contacting have similar conditions, after a couple of formal* transfers failing, we almost always send them using RAR. * our company policy is to encrypt the files in a zip (passworded obviously) and then zip it a second-time... the blocked types are permitted within the inner-Zip. Takes too long, RAR works in a couple of clicks and is easier at the otherside too! ;-)

I think Rar supports Unicode filenames, but Winzip may not have in the past, that is why it is popular with non-english markets..?

Not trying to insinuate that piracy is rampant in Asia, but rar is the most preferred format for warez sites. That may be one reason rar files are so popular in some parts of Asia.

And they have a high piracy rate. Go figure.

Australia, and yep I use it all the time. I'm helping construct an automated build and test farm, and I'm using WinRar to do all the compression of files when moving things around. Solid RAR self extracting archives are great when trying to get reliable test kits to testers. Changed our zip files from 100 meg to 60. - Phil

I tend to use WinZip and for a reason, the format is well supported. Sure, RAR is better but my HDD isn't so small that saving 3k on 200MB worth of files is worth me not potentially being unable to recover archived data from somebody else's PC if mine crashes and burns. Also, the GUI for WinRAR and 7-zip is worse than WinZip IMO.

I use 7z and rar more often than zip.

Nope. I'm totally going with 7zip. Great compression, free engine, LGPL. If I'm sending something to other countries - zip is the way to go (supported in 7zip).

In the UK. We use ZIP virtually exclusively. Anyone who has Windows XP or Server 2003 (or later) has the capability to unzip a ZIP file. Since we're almost exclusively a Windows-oriented ISV/VAR, a huge proportion of our clients can therefore work with it with no extra software required. We still use WinZip because it's generally nicer to use than the compressed folders implementation in Windows. Anyone know if they've sorted out the unzip speed in Windows Vista RTM? Unzipping the WiX sources zip file took, I kid not, upwards of 10 minutes using the compressed folders implementation in one 'release candidate'. WinZip did it so quickly it didn't even bring up the UI.

Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder
