The sign next my front door reads 'No street beggers', seems to work except for the asylum seekers selling pictures.

I wouldn't be surprised if the carol singers who call at my house can't read. ( there goes my idea of printing song sheets!)

We had our first "carol" singers round last night (30th November). (for those in the rest of the world these are people (usually bored / moody youths - the same ones who come at halloween) who knock on the door and "sing" a christmas carol in expectation of a mince pie or money). They attempted to sing "We wish you a merry christmas..." (which isn't even a carol google says it is). I asked them if they were late from last year or early for this year. So, for the next ones that come round, I intend to make them earn their mince-pie. I'm going to print out some song sheets and they can sing a complete carol from the sheet before they get anything. Anybody got any suggestions for a nice long one? :) ChrisB

At Christmas time we go around singing Christmas carols and giving goodies, not requesting them. That seems more in keeping with the meaning of Christmas. :)

This one[^] should do. ;P I have the tune if you'd like it. But if they're the typical young people, they may find it tough to even sing all the words to this[^]. Oh, and if you really want to be mean, you can make them sing one of these[^] - they're wassailing songs, after all!  Christmas carols as torture - just wrong! :~:-D

Yeah, give 'em money, then see them hours later p*ssed up and smoking, that's why I don't give out money to strangers knocking on my door, unless they've made to effort or from the church or somehere. We have the rotary club which dress up a trailer into santa's sleigh they come round all the streets in our area, collecting for charity dressed as Santas playing load christmassy music, now I do give to that cause because the kids love it.

Sounds a lot better than kids knocking on your door expecting money.

Just 'cos they expect money doesn't mean we give it to them. They get a home baked mince pie, corgette (zucchini) and walnut cakes, or beetroot cakes. They should have learned their lesson by now.

They sound like a good idea - I could accompany them on my melodeon. :)

Caroling can be fun with the right group of people. Although it's been years since I've done that, but it's something to be tried at least once.

Get a cheap Karaoke machine, set it up so that the screen can be seen from your doorstep when you open the door, and hand them the mike
