I hit the C++ forums last night as trying to compile my VC 6 lighting control app in VS 2003 presented the typical adventure. As it happens, since it was music related one of the guys who popped in to help was also a musician. Just as programmers are a brotherhood (and sisterhood!), so too are musicians. So I was wondering - how many of you are musicians, and what instruments & styles of music do you most enjoy playing? Doesn't matter whether you gig professionally or just enjoy strumming a guitar in the living room, you're part of a larger family. And of course, any interesting tales involving the making, recording or performing of music (and getting out of the bar alive) are also encouraged. :-D

I play for a morris dance team (The Loose Women), so the styles are mostly Border and Costwold (Both styles of English Folk)

It's an all women dancing team, and by complete co-inceidence, another player is an IT trainer, and the drummer (boran player) is a DBA. We're all the husbands of the dancing team members (and another husband is also a techie) - does this say something about male techies choice of wives? ChrisB

Supposedly, in Universities, the most common double-major or major-minor situtation is between Computer Science and Music, in one form or another. That being said, I've always loved drumming, but have lately found myself with a strong urge to compose music. Of course, I suck horribly at it....

Once a year, my wife and I visit a cousin of hers. The cousin's husband and I then spend the weekend performing and recording a song. Each of us does several of the instruments and will usually engage our wives to a bit of backup vocal singing. On a couple of occassions, my daughters even joined in the fun. Our best recording so far was a really horrible rendition of Low Rider. But hey, it's a fun weekend. I still play guitar once in a blue moon and used to sing vocals for a university band. That was a blast 'cause it was always a challenge to get out of a club and still be in one piece. We were called The Stope Rats because most of the band members were miners. At one infamous gig, I arrived in a limo and was carried upstairs to the bar and through all the crowd to the stage. Thank god YouTube didn't exist then. :)

I've been playing electric organ for about 20+ years. On the menu there's been almost everything between Bach and Beethoven to pop from the '90s. If I get to pick what to play I'd play stuff like Duke Ellington and similar, e.g. "Stardust", "On the Sunny Side of the Street", "In my Solitude" and so on... However, my performance is done very privately, or with priveliged:~ very close friends. I've also been singing in choir for almost 30 years, but I had to give that up since it took too much time rehearsing since we give large concerts, especially for New Year events. This New Year concert tradition celebrates its twentieth birthday this New Year. I'd better stop now, feeling old...:->

My musical journey went from alto sax to bass guitar to electric guitar to acoustic guitar. Now I play mostly fingerstyle acoustic when I can find the time. It's not always easy with two young daughters (and a son due any day now will make it even more scarce). Interestingly, I don't really care to listen to the kind of music I like to play. At least not on a regular basis.

I play most woodwind instruments (clarinet, sax, flute, oboe, recorder) and have been known to toot a trumpet, bow a viola, honk a sousaphone at points during my life. In a pinch, I can comp a little on piano, and play enough guitar to accompany a sing-a-long. When I perform, it's generally musical theater (either as a musician or musical director), big band, or symphony. Oh, yeah, and I was a composition and theory music major in college before I switched to a technical theater major and took the music minor ;-)

Played trumpet in junior high school marching band and french horn in concert orchestra. Piano lessons for 12 years (25 years ago...) - mostly like to play Scott Joplin rags, Enya, Vangelis, 'popular' tunes, and James Bond theme music. I have a Yamaha electric grand piano - it can record directly to MIDI files on a SmartMedia chip.

I played the piano/keyboard for about 10 years, then switched to guitar. I was in a garage band in high school, and we put on quite a few shows in my local area. Then I went to college and became a DJ (not the wedding-and-bar-mitzvah type that just plays songs, but the club type that actually mixes and blends songs together).

I'm a December baby, too. My parents brought me home wrapped in a Christmas stocking. My mom still has the stocking they used, so the plan is to get a shot of my son in there to put next to the picture of his daddy. My wife made me promise not to hang him on the mantle, though. :-D

I've been playing piano since I was 5. These days I mostly play the keyboard works of J.S. Bach, and improvise when I feel like it. I majored in Music Composition at college, so I've had the excellent experiences of writing for symphonic orchestra, string quartet, and other mediums. I got pretty good at playing guitar back in high school, but dropped it when I realized that I could be playing more notes with both hands on a piano (instead of using both hands to play the same notes on a guitar). That just makes more sense to me. If you think that programming requires creativity and attention to detail, try writing a movement of a symphony! :omg: That was an eye-opening experience for me. The piece I wrote was only 8 minutes in duration, but took me over 9 months to write and finalize! Unfortunately, I've never heard it performed (except by my computer). :( I did get my string quintet performed and recorded, though. :)

I used to play a lot of piano and guitar but I've settled into the bass guitar for a while now. I've played in lots of bands of over the years, one was very serious and made a couple of recordings. Lots of different styles too including punk, metal, gospel, latin, reggae, and funk. These days I am in a band called the El Kabong Orchestra. Our next gig is the 12th annual Non-Presidents Ball on the 16th of December. When it started this was the alternative to the formal "Presidents Ball" which has since stopped being held. The NPB is still going strong though. There's a little blurb about us from five years ago at : http://www.corvallislive.com/Artists/ba_d_f.htm[^]

Keyboards since age 10, guitar since age 12. Two bands (Jinx, 1972-1974 and Patio Saturday, 1978-1984). Hammond Organ in Jinx, electric guitar in PS. I also sang and wrote songs for both bands. Jinx was the more serious effort; we actually charged people money to play. PS was a party band; we worked for a case of imported beer and played nearly every weekend; we liked to say we played all the major living rooms in the San Fernando Valley! I still get together with other player friends several times a year. Mostly classic rock and blues.

'til next we type... HAVE FUN!! -- Jesse
