Just wondering: how old were you when you start programming? maybe had your first computer? - I started programming when I was 12yrs (w/ VIC-20 and commodore 64)(I still feel young though!) - Programming language: Basic, then..Assembler for Commodore 64

I started when I was 10 or so on a C64. Moved onto a 286 with GWBASIC/QBASIC and eventually to Pascal. Never looked at BASIC since  And since I discovered C++, never looked at Pascal since ;)

i started back in 1981 with z80 assembler ... i remember when i first looked at a code listing i thought "what in gods name is this gibberish??" ... a few months later i knew the opcodes for the most common instructions and my (no)life as a geek began...

The first thing I ever did was crash a PDP-11 when I was 11 or so by typing Ctrl+C. I was following the directions, no less! Started coding in BASIC at 12, and teaching it to others at 13. Marc

              I didn't crash a PDP-11 until I learned Pascal.

I started a little later, 14 if I recall. One of my friends got a computer (TRS-80 Model I) for Christmas, and he wanted to learn how games were written. He never could learn anything from a book only, and I have always preferred self taught. So he gave me the books to learn and then I taught him. I've been hooked since, but especially because I found a way to sneak in my art career that was refused to me. :) I got my first computer senior year in highschool after saving up all my science fair winnings and working various jobs, and other money making opportunities as they presented themselves. Anyhow, I saved half the money by beginning of senior year, and the other half I paid for senior year. That was an Apple II+ computer, which I promptly jumped into 3D graphics, AI, and logic systems, voice and music synthesis later followed. :) I learned Basic, 6502 assembly, Fortran, Pascal, C in that order, after that came an avalanche of computer languages.

I can't remember how old I was. It was on a Dream 6800[^] kit computer my dad got from a bloke at work. After that a Commodore 64, followed by an Amiga and finally PCs. First I programmed in 6800 machine code (without an assembler), then Basic and 6502 machine code and 68000 assembler on the Amiga. Finally, after getting a PC C and C++.

I was 17 almost 18 (1981) when I got my VIC-20. It only came with programs in their manual you had to type in, but within a few weeks I was starting to build trivial programs (had to be with 3.5K of RAM ;) )with BASIC. My first application for retail came out about one year later that added 52 new commands to the BASIC language, mostly for manipulating graphics.

I was 12 or 13 as well. BASIC was the language. The "computer" was a teletype (all paper output) connected via modem to the U of M. Later that year the school got a terminal with a SCREEN! It was all the rage. The first REAL programming I was 18 or so...assembly language on the Timex Sinclair (Z80 Yeah!) Had that thing ripped open and memory extended in no time heh! First PC from Northgate (mail-order) 286 12MHZ 40MB hardrive 1MB RAM! A smoker!

Cool! I did the same thing but with basic but then when I got my first computer it was assembly anyway so it was kind of wasted learning. People must laugh nowadays when people say they learned to program without a computer on paper but when you really want to learn something and you can't afford a computer...

If you consider learning how to execute commands on a commodore 64 (basic), programming then I suppose I started when I was like 8 :) But on a more serious note, I had started c++ when I was about 18 and today I write C#.

Ahhh, the good old days. 1982 in 10th grade on a trash 80 (Radio Shack TRS-80). You would type a BASIC program in, then save it out to a thermal printer (gray colored wax paper about the size of cash register receipt), and the next time you wanted to run the program you typed it in again. Lucky students grabbed the few trash 80s with cassette recorders. You would press record, tell the program to store, wait for the sounds and tones to end, then hit stop. Unfortunately, it was necessary to record programs 2 or 3 times in a row to make sure the next time you came back, that you had a good copy. And even then it was not certain. In the years after, I drooled over the Atari-ST... and finally purchased an Atari 520ST about 1987. I was only interested in learning how to become a "professional" programmer, so I struggled to come up with the funds to pay for "Megamax Laser C" and then struggled to understand it... the first C compiler I ever used. I still have my code from back then (transferred off Atari ST disks long ago and can run through an emulator now). Looking at it now, it is funny how simplistic the code was and how much trouble I had trying to figure it all out back then. ;)

Just wondering: how old were you when you start programming? maybe had your first computer? - I started programming when I was 12yrs (w/ VIC-20 and commodore 64)(I still feel young though!) - Programming language: Basic, then..Assembler for Commodore 64

Unofficially I was about 14 IIRC. Shortly after that (age 15) it become official when I get me some proper schooling. :)

My first computer was a hand-me-down Tandy computer running DOS 2.1. That's the machine I learned about computers (hardware, using software, etc.) the most with. Later on however I was using a Win 3.1 machine to dive into my programming career. And my first programming language was QBasic with a side of GW-Basic.
