Are there any apps for Windows XP that can calculate the Vista performance index for my hardware? I remember a discussion here in the lounge some time ago, but as far as i remember, the only people who reported index values actually had Vista installed already.

There's a MS download which tells you if your PC can run Vista. I believe it gives you the value, also.

Some also linked to the MS site that explained how it was calculated. Sounds like an interesting article if you want to reproduce that functionality for say XP, etc.

The Vista Upgrade Advisor can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeadvisor/default.mspx[^] I'm downloading it now, so I'm not really sure what it reports. I'll update this message when I do. -- modified at 19:51 Tuesday 5th December, 2006 My computer can run Windows Vista! (I kind of knew that.) Except it can't find information for my NVidia Network Driver. It also complained about Nero, Tweak UI, Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server VSS Writer, ATI Catalyst Center (which should be taken out and shot anyway), Messenger (lol, don't use it)

Thanks mate, I found it. It's called Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor[^]. I can't believe I didn't see that when I was browsing around on microsoft.com. :doh:

Thanks for the link. My slow old machine will be able to run it if I upgrade the video card. About 2 dozen programs with "compatibility issues" though :~

I also got warnings about my network card, Nero and SQL Server VSS Writer. No warnings about Visual Stuido 2005 though. I got a bunch of warnings about my mobile device simulators, so maybe I exceeded the warning limit. ;) I was surprised to see the report say my 64MB video card will support the Windows Aero™ user experience.

The advisor can't find a driver for the onboard network? And of course there's no driver information for my ATI or Creative devices. But hey, I got an Intel CPU and my system can read DVD's. That means I can upgrade.

It only needs 64MB and to be a DirectX 9.0-compatible card. I had it working (in RC1) on an ATI Radeon 9550. You need at least a GeForce 5-series card if it's an nVidia chip.

The Vista Upgrade Advisor fails behind a proxy auth firewall, as (reportedly) does Windows Update (see http://help.lockergnome.com/vista/Vista-Upgrade-Advisor-bombs-ftopict21157.html[^]). Once again Microsoft pegs the duh-o-meter.
