How much is a (legitimate) copy of Office XP going for in either the U.S. or Canada? What about an Educational/Student version? I'm looking to upgrade from Office 2000 to something more, well, modern.

Thanks for the link. Any idea why upgrades are not applicable to the Home Edition?

MS Student Select Office 2003 Professional with an Office Professional Plus 2007 license costs $75 through university software store. Not sure if you can buy it other way then through them.

I would guess because its less than half the price of the next cheapest version, and still considerbly cheaper than any upgrade version. If you go to a University in the US that particpates in the Student Select program you can usually get the student version cheaper than that. On my campus they are selling a version of 2003 for $65 compared to student version selling at the local best buy for $149

At the University of South Carolina we have several windows programs for free, including Office and XP pro. The only cost involved is the shipping fee to get you CD for install, although most can be downloaded from the site. Thats how I got my VS 2005.

University of Pittsburgh was the same. Free download from a secure site or free CD from the staff in one of the labs. Windows, VSPro, and OfficePro were offered that way. At least during my freshman year there was a fairly large selection of other programs used on classes that they'd eat most of the cost of the normal student edition pricing as well.
