Tasted Vegemite

I finally got a chance to taste vegemite :vegemite: . I had lunch with Nish today at an Australian Bakery[^]. The main purpose was to taste Vegemite and to see whether it is really as good as it is proclaimed to be. The girl (who was not an Aussie) who worked at the bakery, warned us that it was very strong and we should not spread too much on the bread. The owner of the bakery who was an Aussie told us that it was the best stuff on the planet. I will have say that neither of them were right. I spread it on a Veggie Pastie (that was the only non-desert I could eat) and also on some plain bread. I personally did not find it too strong, it was just salty. May be I ate it the wrong way but I will not say that I loved it or I hated it. At the risk of offending some people here, I will say that it was just OK tasting.

You should try the real thing - Marmite. Vegemite is just an inferior colonial copy and doesn't compare!:)
I second the call for you to try Marmite, I lived with a girl who's family had come from Australia to the UK and she insisted on Vegemite, but after trying it I was entirely unimpressed it just doesn't compare to Marmite (had to go and make myself some marmite toast because of this).

Vegemite or marmite on toast with sharp cheddar cheese on it, then grilled to melt the cheese until it bubbles. Do 20 slices, eat 10 immediately, and put the other 10 in the fridge for the next day when they taste even better! Or just in a wholegrain sandwich with wads of fresh crispy lettuce...

I hate Vegemite and only eat Marmite. That's because I'm from New Zealand. There is something of a battle between Marmite-eaters and Vegemite-eaters, or even just between Aussies and Kiwis, so be careful what you do or say! Like, you know Mac vs. PC(Windows). Vegemite is too... vegetably for me. And contrary to what people say, one is not significantly healthier than the other, there are only minor nutrient amount differences. I don't know what makes them taste different. As a kid I ate my toast cold, so I like (insert choice of butter/margerine/olive-oil spread here) put on thickly and then marmite over the top. It is pretty strong if you smother it on, but the (spread) helps deal with that :-D

yup I think most Aussies aren't that insecure that they really care if you like Vegemite or not. Personally I fed it to a lot of Americans while I was there and for the most part they didn't like nor dislike it. It's one of those tastes you acquire as a young'un and it stays with you. Then you feed it to your kids and the cycle continues... As for putting it on a veggie pastie - what were you thinking? That's like putting ketchup with ice cream and declaring it 'salty'. Vegemite must be eaten with toast, fresh out of the toaster. Spread a thin layer of butter on the toast while it is hot so the butter melts. Then spread a thin layer of vegemite on top of that. Thin means still seeing the bread through it. Eat immediately. You can get fancy with grated cheese on top if you like, but purists just have it on toast. *heaven* Every food has a preferred way of eating - ignore it at your peril. You wouldn't boil a steak or fry yoghurt - eat Vegemite properly and you'll be delighted. It is also good for hangovers - like spreadable berocca. A good tip for the festive season.

You tried it on a pastie? A true Aussie would opnly really eat on buttered toast, preferably with melted cheese. Putting it on a desert would get you killed here in Australia. And didn't i see on the news that it was banned in the U.S.? Seems you Seppos (Septic Tanks - or Yanks) are willing to allow god knows how many fattening foods for sale, chemicals for sale, drugs for sale, but a harmless food full of natural goodness with a high vitamin B component gets disallowed? America you are doomed:)

Those are fighting words my friend (and i use the word friend very loosely :) ). Its considered normal for us to adopt things from New Zealand , like Crowded Hopuse, and think of them as our own. you should be flattered, because without us adopting these things, no one in the world would give a rats arse :) We make your gear famous, and we dont get any credit for it, and you buggers come over here and live off our dole on top of it :p You can whinge about Australia all you like, but you and i both know, given the chance every Kiwi would be over here in a heartbeat. I mean without Kiwi's emigrating here our Social Services inftrastructure, particularly the dole, would actually go to real Australians, and not you blow-ins from across the ditch :) Still its better to have Kiwi's here than more whinging bloody Poms :) Ah, and while im here and mentioning whinging Englishmen, the Ashes are back home where they belong :) p.s. Inferior colonial copy? I take it from that that you are an Ashes-less person from Britain, the country that still operates like its in the 14th century...with a queen and all that.... It doesnt surprise me that you make that comment, especially being British, a country where people are so anally retentive they have to call their wheat derived breakfest cereal Weet-A-Bix, not WeetBix, like we do here in a civilised grown up country.
