In my family, we celebrate birthdays on actual birthdays. We may celebrate more than once in the case that birthdays land in the middle of the week.

Sure - we may have a weekend celebration for a weekday birthday, but it's clear the day that we're celebrating, and the celebration is as close to the actual day as physically possible. That's obviously different to saying 'we don't know when he was born, but we'll pick a day and celebrate it then'. If I don't know someone well enough to know their birthday, or ( as in this case ), they choose not to let me know when it was, why would I celebrate it at all ?

Yep, I usually see one votes as a sign of immaturity.

"Christmas or Christmas Day is an annual holiday that marks the traditional birthdate of Jesus of Nazareth. Christmas combines the celebration of Jesus' birth with various other traditions and customs..." Why do you argue with this? Why do you even go to church? I doubt you truly believe in God.

Some Christian attitude there. You give a display like that and then you wonder why so many people thinks Christians are a bunch of fools. You are fine example of a foolish Christian. In my church we celebrate Christ's birth on Christmas day, even though the evidence points to his actual birth being in the summer. I always thought it was in June or July, but it could have been September as CG says. It really does not matter either way. I do not agree with CG saying it is a sham, as Christmas is very important to many Christians, but I also will not question someone else's faith because he or she has a different opinion on the subject.

Often, that's the case. They can be a good way for CPians to provide peer pressure, but more often than not, that's not how it works.

And to you :-) I'll be working pretty much every day except Xmas itself, but I'm still looking forward to some time with the wife and kids.

is it true or its just christians celebrate it because their forfathers have been celebrating since ages?
To be honest, we Charistains celebrate 'the birth' on the 25th of December or 5th of January for the same reason radical Muslims celebrate their religion of Peace while bombing school busses... Notice how both are a myth based celebration but still have an impact?

Yes Adnan, see the link below on my blog that talks about this. In short, it is a myth that Jesus was born on Dec 25.

For once you make sense. Seriously, man, that was good.

It does not matter when he was born. Christmas is about celebrating his birthday and giving and sharing and doing nice things. A lot people don't have there birthday parties on there birthday, but they still celebrate it.

As far as I can know or understand, dec-25 is not Jesus birthday and Jesus is not 2006 y.o. As somebody said, they didn’t have birthday certificate, at that time. Apart of that, the historical existence of a person named “Jesus from Nazareth” is proven… What nobody says, by now, is the origin of that date. I don’t remember who, but I’m certain that a Pope in late Roman Empire –not knowing when to celebrate- fixed the date with a canonic law. And that’s why the actual Catholic church (and many later founded Protestants) still refer to that date for nativity celebrations. So the word “myth” is not properly true, being not “spontaneous”. The solstice festivities were pre-existent, with all their traditions. That Pope, simply, did what many ancient Christians did: merge the meaning of reason to be happy (the light the comes back after the solstice) with the meaning of their faith (thus giving another meaning to the word “light”). Note that many Christian recurrence always follows this guideline: “Christianize” an existing celebration that people would like to continue. Many saints have their celebration day because of a pre-existent celebration that can adapt to the reason that saint should be remembered. About the history, Mary and Joseph where moving from Bethlem to Nazareth because of a Roman census, hence the nativity happened “on trip” (and this suggests March or September, since Roman census normally happened on that months, and where the only way to “count” people). And also, when the Gregorian calendar was established there was an arithmetic mistake of five years. So Jesus born in 5d.c. (five years after itself…). It took some centuries before someone discovers it, but –at that point- the official Church decided to let things as they were, to avoid other big confusions with dates re-counting and aliasing. In other words, its not an official birthday and not a mith, Just a canonical convention that anyone accept, being everithing else nothing more than another convention.
