I like building it, but I don't like installing software which takes way too long. I also always forget to copy something minor to a new machine so then I have to either redownload it from the internet or reconnect old hard drive to pull information from it (which might be something as trivial as forgetting to copy foobar playlists from Program Files or widescreen hacks for Far Cry). I also don't like when I try to launch a program and then remember that it's new computer and I haven't installed it yet...

Ah, the beauty of Drive images. I use this software that takes an incremental picture of my disc without rebooting windows, then if my system every crashes i can either restore, or mount the image to a drive letter and copy whatever I want. Compression makes the images manageable, so I keep them for 6mo or so after a clean install just in case I need something. Cost isn't too bad either, compared to the old powerquest one that norton jacked up the price on. It doesn't work for windows software raid, but how many of us actually use that anyway ;) http://www.drive-image.com

setting up a new machine? It takes me days, weeks, years! to get all the software installed and properly configured. A lot of that is due to the fact that the defaults just don't pass muster. I guess if I conformed to the defaults then life would much more simple.

agreed. Even Windows itself comes with settings that seem specifically designed to annoy me,like the file view options in Explorer. I'm not a frigging noob, I can handle file extensions

I'm sorry Heinze. I know this poster is not you, but I slipped and voted 5 while aiming for the Abuse link. :(

To Heinze: Just ignore him and use the Abuse vote. That is what is is there for, and his mess will be cleaned up by this time tomorrow. To you: Shouldn't you be getting ready for school to start again?

Tell me about it. I got a new computer about two weeks ago and I'm *still* setting it up :-( But I'm setting up all my stuff to run over several virtual machines so hopefully I'll never have to do this again. Being able to just copy a bunch of files over to a new box and have everything Just Work(TM) is just too beautiful for words

Nope! Love it! It's like painting a house or something, that new feeling. Besides all you need to do is take notes before you do the change if it's the same computer.

Yeah but there are so many things you forget you tweaked over the years. If only there was a way to export ALL user prefs for all apps and restore them again :sigh:

Yep.. one reason I haven't wiped my laptop.. which is in serious need of being wiped :) It's just not running as fast as it used to. But hey it's a Dell, I should just be happy it hasn't blown up!

I've done it so often that it's become second nature. I'm usually up and running fine within a couple of hours, fully configured by the weekend.
