An application that lets you emulate another OS. You can use this software to run Linux on your Windows machine without having to dual boot. The virtual OS/PC runs in a window and is more or less a different computer. Kind of like dual core processors have two processors to the OS but are on the same CPU. (Probably get flamed for that analogy;P)

(Nitpick Mode on) VMWare and Virtual PC and the like don't "emulate the OS" - it's a real OS, really installed. The "emulation" is of the hardware - a "virtual PC" (end of Nitpick Mode) ;P

Caffeine - it's what's for breakfast! (and lunch, and dinner, and...)

I use both VMWare and Microsoft Virtual PC. They both fit the bill for my needs :)

Unless VMWare and VPC have gotten a lot easier to setup over the last few years, I'd strongly suggest using the same app for all platforms to save yourself the pain.

I am a happy VMWare owner and user. I'm playing with FreeNAS which uses FreeBSD on it right now.

Three years ago, getting any of them to work under win2k was hell. I haven't attempted any other configs before or since then.
