SciTE: starts up fast, syntax highlighting for just about everything, good-looking printouts, solid search-and-replace.

In a text editor? I can see that in a code editor but that is overkill for a simple text editor.

UltraEdit, just try it and you'll understand. Oops I read free a bit differently than most. I'd go with Scite or however you capitalize it. It's how I'd go. If you don't mind Java then jEdit is very cool. -- modified at 20:28 Friday 5th January, 2007

It's probably quite powerful, but i shudder every time i see a screenshot - so much clutter around the text! :omg:

I used to think that... But it's amazing how much code i read when i'm not editing. Whether reading code i've downloaded somewhere, or reviewing a file out of source control, or just pulling some snippets out of my personal toolbox... and good highlighting helps make all of this nicer. Not to mention syntax highlighting for batch files, INI files, and various other little text files that i'm constantly opening and closing. :D

[edit] Oops! Didn't notice that they needed to be free. How dreadfully embarrassing. [/edit] Codewright. (Chris, where's our :tombstone: icon?) Actually, for all intents and purposes, I use it as a Windows version of Brief. I've got Visual Slick Edit, which is also nicely done and supports the Brief keyset, but there are tiny little differences between it and CodeWright, so I keep switching back. Not because CW is better, but because it's what my fingers are used to. -- modified at 19:54 Friday 5th January, 2007

UltraEdit is the best for $$$. I've used PSPad for free. UltraEdit is the slickest by far.

Programmer's notepad. It's small, has highlighting for everything, very customizable, can manage projects and use other console tools and capture their output with a cool "system call" editor (for lack of a better word) and plugins, although there aren't many yet. Yeah, so that was more than 30 words. I hope I don't get banned.. :~ Oh, by the way, I made a C++ text clips file for it, and submitted it. When it gets posted, and if you try the program, let me know what you think :->

I will second that too. I learnt lot of Java techniques from its source code.

I will second Photonman007’s recommendation of Programmers Notepad, for the same reasons. Plus tabbed documents, fast and supports changing of line ending for either Windows or *Nix.

I'd love to help, but unfortunatley I have prior commitments monitoring the length of my grass. :Andrew Bleakley:
