I am officially stupid. Please keep away all hardware from my reach. Today I picked up two WD Raptor[^] babies - a belated christmas gift from yours truly to myself. And I forgot the friggin' SATA cables!

I would have expected the drives to come with cables! I remember when hardware came with the cables and screws required to install it! *doh* does this mean I am getting mature?

margins are way down for this stuff, so for the techie outlets a good deal of their turnover comes from cables and mounting srews and stuff.

as far as I know this has never been the case with hard-drives. CD-ROMs occasionally come with an extra cable, though never understood why they did and Hard-drives didn't, but all the hard-drives I have ever bought have come as bare drives in a OEM or Retail, Sata, IDE or SCSI. They expect you to have the cables from your motherboard, which mine came with 6, the latest one I installed over last weekend (not for me) came with 10.

I was just going to reply with the same comment. Every MB I have ever bought came with the cables. But I guess if you buy a brand name PC from Dell or who-ever then maybe those do not come with extra cables.

It depends on who you buy them from. Dell doesn't send extra cables, but any custom builder who lets you choose the motherboard and case, should send you all the left-over goodies from case supplies to motherboard supplies. All our builds at work from Monarch Computers have come with the extras shipped inside the motherboard box turned inside out. Extra cables to disks, to case supplies unused, everything that came with the components because all the components were what you could buy in the store.

I could open an IDE cable corner shop - you want flat or round, 80 or 40 pins, do you prefer neon color? Which is probably exactly why I forgot the cables for the drives. But it is still my first SATA MoBo, purchased as bulk only with the necessary cables for the two drives already in it.

My WD retail drives I used for a raid came with cables and screws. OTOH I bought them on rebate from a boxmart store, so they might've been a nonstandard packaging for use with inhouse upgrading.
