Just got bitten by my lazy backup habits again.. my wife's Toshiba laptop lost the ability to boot XP after running Windows Update (should never have turned on auto updates, yeah, I know), and we had never backed it up. Most unfortunately the Toshiba recovery disk forces a complete wipe of the disk when it reinstalls the OS (WTF?), so getting the data off the system has been tricky. So I need to get with the backup thing. Only problem is I've never found one that actually worked (the last one I tried, which came with my Western Digital external drive, crashed on startup.) Can anyone recommend a good backup program? The medium will be my WD external drive.

Handy Backup[^] is good. It's rather slow for CDs and DVDs but plenty fast for backup to a hard drive.

I use DriveImageXML[^] and although there is the slight problem in that it runs only in windows, I successfully verified it works restore and backup from Windows PE (via Bart PE Builder). That means I can backup live, and restore if a major crash occurs (as it did recently). I can also choose to fix the registry (as I did) or restore the image (as I have tested on another drive).

Acronis True Image has always worked well for me.

Thanks to all who replied; I'll start downloading demos while I restore the Toshiba's HD.

Stupid that - requiring a complete wipe, some software/marketing people need an appointment with a firing squad! Apparently its what happens if you don't get the original Microsoft disks, you get the OEM's image (so I'm told!) Try using the built in Microsoft backup - it works just fine. Although haven't tried a backup from a wiped disk, own data such as outlook, word and development stuff restores just fine (yes been their and done that!)
