Locations and films (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer)
-
Hello all, Yesterday my girlfriend asked me to go to see that film as she was curious about it and had not read the book. OK, the film was good, in fact was very "similar" to the book (avoiding the normal distances that always appear between books and films). My girlfriend is from a village very close to Girona and we go to Girona almost each week in order to talk and walk through the old city and to have supper in some of its restaurants. I become surprised because a lot of scenarios on the film were taken in Girona, in fact there's one of our favourite restaurants that appears there (of course they have the doors closed and you cannot see that this is a restaurant). This is the first time in which I'm so familiar with one location of one film. Of course I've been in several cities like Paris and others, but not as often like Girona. Well, I was curious on CPians who had felt this some times due to other films... Have you been very familiarized some time with any location on one film? and which location it was?

The original Get Carter (Michael Caine version) was filmed around Newcastle. There is one scene where he starts running in the centre of Newcastle, and finishes running at Seaton Sluice (about 10 miles from Newcastle). Provided much hilarity for locals. Apart from that. Durham Cathedral provides most of the cloister shots in the Harry Potter films. Alnwick Castle also provides a lot of shots for Harry Potter. Hadrian's Wall, Alnwick Castle and parts of Northumberland were extensively used in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Some outdoor shots in Alien 3 were filmed at Seaham. (If you watch carefully, you see a coal truck moving across a cliff face in one of the scenes). (This was all possible because filming in the North East used to be cheap). Ridley Scott modelled Blade Runner on an area near his hometown of Hartlepool. Numerous UK TV shows have also been filmed locally.

I had an old Rodney Dangerfield movie that was shot throughout my home town. Several scenes were done right across the street from my work (at the time). About a year later, I watched the movie, and was amazed how good it all looked. The movie made it better than real life.

A lot of advertisements are shot in and around where I come from; Cape Town, South Africa. It is beautiful and cheap so it is popular with advertisers. It is odd seeing Irish and American adverts selling Irish and American products but with my hometown in the background. Especially odd to see a beautiful, hot, white sand beach that I know from home but for an Irish insurance product.

I lived in Tucson, Arizona when Nickelodeon was filming "Hey Dude". That was the high point of my life.

Having been born and raised in New York City it happens to me a lot. Even though I have not lived there for many years I can tell the setting is NYC from even something as small as seeing a park bench, a subway platform or a street sign in the opening scenes.

The scene of Manhunter[^] (original Hannibal Lector movie) in the mental hospital was filmed in the High Museum[^] in Atlanta. When I first came to the states in the early 90's I had a job close to the museum and every Wednesday I could get in for a couple of bucks to see the latest exhibits.

There were two bigger (german) movies lately that playing in my home town. It can break suspension of disbelief pretty harsh, esp. when they mix up locations "because noone will notice" (which is dumb IMO if you make the town a major plot point).

Which was quite an accomplishment for an "unfilmable book". After all, the main hero - odeur - never really appeared on the silver screen.

Yes about a zillion movies and tv shows are filmed in Canada on the west coast around Vancouver and Vancouver Island. I can't count the number of movies or shows I've been watching and said "hey I know where that is". Even the local highway here on Vancouver Island was shut down for a few days for some big car accident / chase scene being filmed for some movie that turned out to be pretty crappy. When I was a kid they filmed the B movie "Ants" aka "It happened at lakewood manor" in the town I went to school in. Everyone knew someone who was an extra in the movie and everyone who was an extra took home some of the fake ants that they used for more distant shots which actually looked like little black cogs or gears. My good friend worked for years on X-Files in Vancouver as a cameraman, they even used his hands as a stand in for shots of Mulder dialing a phone a few times because apparently his hands looked the most like the actors. He has some great stories of crawling around filming in the sewers in Vancouver and making the north shore mountains look like some place in south america with big cutouts for sillouets of palm trees etc.

As in the book ;) the odeur never appeared in the book also... at least not in mine...

  :^) Good point! It's one of the most intense books I know, dragging you me in, creating an independent world. The first trailer started with the girl cutting apricots - I instinctively knew this had to be "perfume". I just wonder what was changed in the international versions.

Deja View - the feeling that you've seen this post before.I must admit I didn't know that. Interesting....two of my great grandparents lived in Seaham. By the way, we missed an opportunity to meet up for a drink over the holiday - Beth and I were in York over New Year. I only realised I'd not contacted any of the local CPians when we got there, and by then we were beyond reach of even a modem connection. It was good coming back to visit the Old Country though. :)
