Anyone making any money selling software?
-
Hi, I have a fulltime job and write software in my spare time. I think this software has some commercial value. I sure could use the money but do not have much time to invest. I was wondering if any of you have experience selling your software. Is it worth the trouble and do you actually sell any copies. How do you handle distrubution, support, pricing etc. Woody Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. yes. at the peak of the economy, back in 2000, i was making clsoe to $10K US/mo.. things are drastically slower now - i'm down to 1/4 of that. but that's still a nice chunk of money. it took a couple of years to build sales up to that level (and just 8 months for them to fall off by 60%), so be prepared to do a little leg-work, word of mouth advertising, etc.. i sell on-line only, with a company called RegSoft handling billing for me. -c

I've done this on a small scale, so I'm going to hand out some advice that might be useful. 1. Use guerilla-marketing as much as possible (extreme word of mouth). You might also want to force yourself to attend business/industry functions in order to spread the word. 2. Leverage off a rental model. Obviously, this is very much dependent on the type of application and location of the client. Also depends on your financial pos. Is getting some money every month OK, or do you need all money up front? I've found that the "rental model" can help you get a sale: the client doesn't get the feeling that you're going to sell and run. 3. start small - i.e. aim at a niche market and spread out gradually. Easier said than done! Cheers, Simon "Every good work of software starts by scratching a developer's personal itch.", Eric S. Raymond

10K a month. Nice job. For a solo flier that is doing well. Like you, we have taken a hit. Thankfully not near as drastic. Tim Smith I know what you're thinking punk, you're thinking did he spell check this document? Well, to tell you the truth I kinda forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this here's CodeProject, the most powerful forums in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question, Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk?
