Van Halen rocks

I've just done something I should have done ages ago. Installed Winamp ( as WMP both sucks and blows up for me ), and let it index my MP3s. I need to go through and add about 500 CDs, but I have 17162 CDs ( I know it's not a real lot in this age of piracy, but I like knowing. I own 933 odd CDs, so guess 12 tracks per CD, that's 11196 legimate tracks, the remainder is a mix of stuff from when I used to download, stuff I've bought, and stuff you can't buy ). Anyhow, that wasn't the point of this. The point is, I just started to play 1984, and it's awesome. I am seeing a show on the 25th of 5 tribute bands, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, KISS, ACDC and Black Sabbath. Should be fun. I've maintained for a while that it's easier to just play CD's while I work, but I'm starting to think that the mp3 thing is much more convenient and leads to me listening to a wider variety of my collection. What do you guys do ?

I'm old-fashioned. I listen to CD's. The only time I use my MP3 player is when I'm on one of the cardio machines in our fitness room. I do have another constraint; I'm vaguely bothered by the idea of using my employer's computer to store and play my music collection.

MP3s or Last.FM mainly, although I tend to have it playing from a different computer either laptop when I'm working on the desktop or vice versa. (Both have copies of my library for when I take my laptop away on a trip or something). BTW agree totally on your view of the said artists
I have no idea what I just said. But my intentions were sincere.

And how many of those CD's are gathering dust because you have not the time to play them?
I spend 14 hours a day in my office. Some CD's I'm not into enough to play, but others gather dust, waiting for the day I decide I want to listen to just that CD. I can just suddenly decide I need to hear a particular song. A lot of CDs are there for just that reason. Others are there, because it's dumb to throw them out, and not worth the time it takes to sell them.

Ah the memories, I had to do a synthesised version of "Jump" for an A-Level music tech project so the two of us doing Jump spent 50% of the time listening to all the tracks on those discs (for research purposes ).

I can't listen to music while I work. I immediately get sucked into the song, which makes it difficult to concentrate on the business at hand. Too many years of jumping up and down in rock & roll bands, I suppose. The irony is that I'd like to listen to music 24/7 because it's such a passion, but because it's a passion it tends to obliterate anything else. Well, you know. Except girls. :)

Why is it that most of the MP3 players out there seem to focus their development time on skins and inane UI elements?

At work I do both, MP3s certainly allow me to vary the music, but the boom box I have at work lets me play the music louder. :)
I'd love to help, but unfortunatley I have prior commitments monitoring the length of my grass. :Andrew Bleakley:

And 'Hot for teachers'... Oh no, wait that was for the video. Agreed with Panama and Poundcake, don't know/remember unchained. --edit and that Tribute show... if it's only half as good as it sounds, you'll have a great show. Enjoy!

Feature list is pretty slim, once it plays music and manages list of songs... All that's left is to look better than the other one.

Interesting. I get heat from some people for listening to music while I work, but the fact is, most of the time, albums that have been part of my life for 20 years, just wash over me. I enjoy that it's on, but I often notice that the last song is playing, or the album finished ages ago, because I'm focusing on work. If I need to do design type stuff, then there's no music, but while I'm coding, it creates an atmosphere that I enjoy, without distracting me. And, I can play a lot of the songs I listen to, I know what you mean. Strap teh guitar on me, and it's a different experience altogether. Of course, I can't really play anymore, not with the back and arm issues I have.

That part of the complaint, most do this very precariously. Could you imagine scrolling through Christian’s list of music in Winamp? I bet WMP flat refused to even start, not like it would have mattered, you would never find the CD you where looking for anyway. Couple Features that are missing >A Queue, similar to a jukebox found at any bar. >Searching, why can’t I search a list? What am I just suppose to scroll through 5000 songs to find the right one? >Why does something that merely plays music require a system with a massive amount of memory / processor? >Why do I have to “import” my music at all? Your right about one thing getting playing music is unbelievably simple, it’s the rest of it that counts and Skins have nothing to do with music as far as I'm concerned. :)
