Hi Guys, anybody here from Germany? Well, I am. It was already nice from our politicans to raise the Taxes to 19%, but today I wanted to buy a new TFT. Since having a dell laptop and I'm very happy with that one. I checked out Dell Monitors. A 24" Monitor in Germany from Dell costs 1,075€ (1388.71 US Dollar). I also checked out the American Dell and there the same monitor costs 674 US Dollar. What's that? Is it just like Dell hating Germany and making up an extra Tax? I don't know how other Germans think about that, but lately most of the prices seems to be twice the price in America. Is Germany just gonna fuck up? Peace, Ben

It happens the same here in Italy. :sigh: There are, though, some (very low) EU import taxes (something like 1-2% I think).

            >> Dell hating Germany and making up an extra Tax >> Ben, this is highly unlikely. Dell does not love anyone except money. What do they gain by hiking the prices for a wealthy country like Germany ? Fewer customers ? Most likely the import duties and the tax structures are responsible for this high price. Otherwise, another manufacturer can enter with fair pricing and dominate Germany (huge market). >> Taxes to 19% >> Is this sales tax ? Dells 24" costs around 850 USD here in India.:->

Yes, only the VAT (value-added tax) have raised from 16% to 19%.

The is just raising prices because they can - the monitors are made in the far east. Some companies are worse than others for this which can be a good reson for buying from the smaller places - they have to compete on price.

                The tigress is here :-D

Germany doesn't suck. At all. All EU salesman do. All electronics is more expensive in the EU countries. In my country (Slovenia) it is cheaper to get a ticket, fly to New York, buy a high-end laptop there, spent some money in duty free and still you would save some money. Some prices are really silly. It is more or less the same with other EU countries. Regarding the tax rise, I think it is necessary. IMHO 19% VAT is no disaster. The unemployment rate must be lowered imediately and the economy growth must be boosted. Europe needs a strong Germany! If half of the money from the tax raise goes to the right direction, it would be great.

How does a tax increase help in decreasing unemployment ? Isnt it the other way around ?

Well, bottom line, they need more money in the budget for various restructure programs. They should at the same time decrease some business related tax to help boost the economy. But their budget deficit is to big to do anything efficient. So this tax rise was inevitable IMHO. Plus some reforms needs to be done, like the reform of the healthcare system. Something had to be done. Vital Germany is extremly important to the entire EU region. Let's just hope that the politicians there know what they are doing and that they are able to pull the Germany out of this "crisis".

Don't moan too much... our company (based in the UK) buys its Dell computers from Dell-Germany rather than Dell-UK as it's 10-15% cheaper in Germany rather than the UK! Dell-Germany deliver to the UK with no problems! When I lived/worked in Germany, I found *everything* to be about 33% cheaper than the UK... but last time I went back to visit (after the Euro came in) the difference was about 15%! Microsoft are not much better, Vista is going to cost over 2x the amount of the US version -- might be understandable if some "translation" of software/manuals are needed, but we always get stuck with a thinly skinned version of the US products (sometimes having to select English (US) as they don't offer an English (UK)).

                            Regards, Ray

Last time I was in Germany (1 year ago) I bought my Mrs a pair of shoes for £0.50, which I thought was quite cheap. Germay do sell the best Kebabs I've ever tasted. The supermarkets in the UK are really moving in on prices ASDA (now owned by Wallmart) was selling 19" gateway flatpanels for £150..$300USD. TESCO was selling a laptop with Dual P4 mobile, 1Gb ram, 120Gb drive, DVD burner, GeoForce card all windows XP media all for £699.....Infact I may go and buy it.
