trick of the day [modified]

I got this trick question today from a friend of mine. I am trying to solve it. i solve 50 percent of the question solved. Note if you have a lot of work don't continue reading cause it will take some time to be solved. The trick question is: You have infront of you 12 eggs. All have the same color the same shape and the same size (you can not diffrentiate between one and the other by just looking at it). 11 of those 12 eggs have the same weight and one differs (either less or more). The question is to find which one of those 12 is the different one. You have a balance and you can use it only 3 times. I will remind you in one important thing that we don't know if the one egg which is different from the others weighs more or less than any of the other 11 eggs. good luck :) if you think you got the solution send your answer to my mail address jamilabkh@gmail.com to leave some time for others to think about it don't post your answers;)
You break all the eggs and put them in a pan and make a giant omlette. Job's a good'un!

It can't be done in 3 tries if you don't know if you are looking for a lighter or heavier egg. I suspect your questions has got corrupt.

With 3 trials you should be able to find the different egg out of 27, I think:) Ciao, Gérard
that's not right at all. why don't you post your answer and let us discuss it :doh:

If you know that one egg is heavier, or one is lighter, it's easy. If you just know that one is different, it isn't so simple...
That's the trick here. It would be very easy if we knew which one is heavier. Think more:doh:

27 eggs 1 step: 9 eggs on the left side of the balande, 9 on the right side and nine on the tabel. now you know, in which of 9 eggs is the different one. 2. step: 3 eggs on the left side of the balaance, .... now you know, in which of 3 eggs is the differnt one. 3. step: 1 egg on the left side of the balance,...... Is there a fault??? Ciao, Gérard

Yes, of the last set which is the odd one out. As you don't know whether it is heavier or lighter you only have a chance of being right. In the last set if the two eggs on the balance (one on each side) are equal it is the one on the table, if the two eggs on the balance are unequal then which is it? It isn't the one on the table, but it is on on the balance - but which? It is still a 50/50 split.
