Oh man, those Nintendo Wiis are fun. Co-worker has one upstairs and I just spent half an hour smashing a ball around a tennis court. Pretty natural and you even get a rumble on impact with the ball. Beats the pants off the cool-to-look-at-but-oh-so-boring Xbox 360 games. OK, lets say it is a totally different experience and not really a competitor to the Xbox 360. But for a family, for kids, for non-technical people and for people who don't have hours to spend deep inside a game, the Wii is fun and probably a better choice. Heck, I just find most console games to be boring. But, the Wii looks like something all together different. I must admit the few times I've played around with one it was fun and amusing even with the terrible graphics. I am curious to see how far they can take their 'new' gaming paradigm.

After playing half life and other games on the pc for years we got an xbox the christmas before last and my immediate thought when I fired it up was "the graphics suck". Being so used to playing on a pc with let's face it a million times better graphics than a tv set, you really have to have not played any games on a half decent pc to not be dissapointed by the graphics on tv.

You are crazy. My 51 inch TV and 1080i from my 360 is better then your pc monitor. Sitting at a desk is for work.

Crikey! Microsoft must be paying you a ton mate. HDTVs, Xbox 360s, Wiis, games, broadband etc. etc. ;) And the Guinness is still good here though it is only a once a week affair I am having with it. No more throwing up on your couch I promise. I'd like to try a racing game on the Wii where I reckon the controller should be pretty cool. As for playing with other people the Xbox Live system is very cool, I agree. But the thing with the Wii is the person you are playing against is right next to you and is falling about the place trying to hit the ball back to you. It is different and refreshing.

BTW, my other hobby (besides gaming) is brewing beer. I have my homebrew on tap in my basement along with my games. Right now I have a stout on tap that is quite similar to Guiness but a bit more choclatey.

But we're talking about video games. Remember those text only rpgs on the old 640K IBM machines. Would anyone still play one of the those? No. Because graphics matter in gaming. Go read a book or something so you can make a more intelligent argument.

I'll have to give it a look, sounds like just the sort of thing i could go for. I almost hate to admit it, but i've played Tetris on my phone more than anything else in the past couple of years. Just can't stand to sit down and play anything that requires a big time investment. Then again, back when i was a teenager playing Warcraft 2 or C&C online, i'd make fun of guys in their mid-20's mercilessly (hah, those losers... playing games!). :rolleyes:

I've seen the system, I've seen the demos, and it just looks fun. The entire "get up off your duff and move" concept is very appealing; not something video games are "known for", that's for certain. I realize that actually playing tennis and/or going bowling is far better, but then, when it's 20(f) outside, like it is today, having the option to actually play tennis, indoors, without having to say, be a multi-millionaire, does have it's appeal. Once the price of these systems comes down, and all the bugs, H/W issues have been resolved, I will probably get one.

BTW, my other hobby (besides gaming) is brewing beer. I have my homebrew on tap in my basement along with my games. Right now I have a stout on tap that is quite similar to Guiness but a bit more choclatey.
Sounds good. Must be a nice setup with the TV, console and beer on tap :-D

Sure it is fun for half an hour, but once the novelty of the controller wears off you are stuck playing on a last generation machine. The Wii = Xbox 180 with a new controller. If you own a nice big hdtv, or projector and a good sound system the xbox 360 kicks ass. And don't tell me graphics don't matter. How immesered can you feel when you are looking at the blocks that are GameCube (I mean Wii) graphics. You probably still write Classic ASP with VB6.
*disclaimer* I do not have a wii, or a PS2, or an Xbox of any kind I find the arguments about the power of the graphics really irritating. perhaps I am unique in this, but here is my reasoning, just for the record. I have a 19" wide screen TV. Yep, it is that SMALL! so the whole "Hi-definition" graphics argument just disappeared. There is no room for a bigger TV in my work room. There is a bigger TV in the living room, but it is only a 21" CRT, nothing to write home about. I have a high end PC, it was very high end when I purchased it :) I am trying to remember the last time I loaded any game, other than spider solitare on this machine. I think I played Lego Starwars for a big 6 months ago, but the dates are fuzzy. I do have a Nintendo DS lite which I get out and play in short bursts every now and then, when I want to relax a bit with some simple and above all FUN games. This "the multi player is awesome" idea about games always strikes me as a strange idea. I live in England, keep hours that are closer to America than England (due to my work) and have enough problems keeping up with email and chat programs. The concept of having to catch up with people I am interested in playing against online is just a headache to me. So any argument for a games console based around words like graphics, surround sound, etc, are a dead loss with me. Space considerations - I looked into an XBox 360 when they came out, and when I discovered the size of the power brick I immediately dismissed it, since fitting it into this room is never worth the fuss. The wii unit is apparently really small, so fitting it in is actually a valid option for me. the games (from what I have read) are all about FUN rather than anything else. fun sounds good :) But I have never tried one, never seen one in the flesh, so I am not rushing out to get one. My final comment on graphics in games, for a LONG time I LOVED the game Rogue Squadron on the PC. It used to run at 800*600, and had very poor graphics by the standard of new games. I did not care a bit! It was fun, put a big smile on my face, and made excellent use of my force feedback joystick. I never could make it run under winXP without it crashing *sob* otherwise I would still break it out now and then. I am not the "average" consumer, I know this, but lets be honest, how many "average" consumers have a massive hi-def TV, surround sound system ready to wire up a games console? We've been having fun with our Wii. And I think you're right about Nintendo going after a more family market. My wife has been having fun with it (she is not a gamer by any stretch) and is currently the house boxing champ. My son who is more of a gamer has been enjoying Zelda a lot. My 4-year-old daughter has a blast with tennis, golf, and bowling... and all four of us can play together. It's not just that we can, we all actually want to with this thing. It's well suited to get gamers & non-gamers together for some social fun. Even our 85-year-old neighbor played a round of bowling with us and enjoyed himself. I'm pleasantly surprised with how well young and old alike in my life have been able to take to the Wii together and enjoy the experience.

Maybe, but I didn't have a 1080i at the time, I do now but my old xbox is gathering dust. Probably the majority of people with a pc still have a way worse resolution tv set.
Well, the xbox came out in 2001. That was six years ago. A six year old PC wouldn't look to good right now either.

I have a PC High End/XBOX/XBOX 360, games are amazing where you usually kill 1000 guys, run at high speed in LA street or fly a F18 over the sea with a high adrenaline and all the sh.. on board, but I have a kid too. XBOX 360 games sucks for kid generation, I'm thinking buy a Wii to have fun with my son :). So far viva piñata is the only game that I saw suitable for kids and still is for grownup kids. If you want top games go for XBOX360 If you want fun games go for Wii If you want high quality games and also have fun, buy both.

That's like getting a Ferrari and using regular gas - the performance will suck but it will still work. When you buy a sports car you use proper fuel. When you buy an Xbox 360 (or PS3) you should use proper equipment. By the way - you can plug your 360 into your PC monitor too and get Hi-Def gaming - just so you know (you need the VGA cable - I have one here that I'm not using so if you want it, let me know)

Once the Mario game comes out, the Wii will once again have the best game available for any current platform.

I've played Rainbow Six and Gears of War. They are like every other game I can play on a PC. I admit, they are fun and I love a good hour of Half Life 2 every few weeks. But I am not going to shell out a couple hundred dollars for an Xbox or Playstation when I can get the same or similar games on my PC. There is no point for me. A Wii is different. It is a fun entertainment device I can play for a few minutes a day, blow off some steam and not take too seriously. Nintendo are after a different market to Microsoft and Sony. Nintendo are after families and the majority of the world who really, really don't want to spend 6 hours blowing up aliens in make believe settings. Your mom could pick up the Wii and have fun. The same probably cannot be said of the Xbox. Look, the Xbox works for you and that is cool, I don't mind. But for a guy like me who already has a PC, it makes little sense. A Wii is fun, frivolous and does what my PC doesn't. So yeah, I'll take tennis over Gears of War anyday too :)
