Jon Sagara I controlled my laughter and simple said "No,I am very busy,so I can't write any code for you". The moment they heard this all the smiling face turned into a sad looking face and one of them farted. So i had to leave the place as soon as possible. --Mr.Prakash Blog | Site | Articles

Can anyone recommend a good rear-projection TV? My mother-in-law asked me to help her find one, and I haven't shopped for TVs in almost 10 years, so I have no idea what's out there. She doesn't want an ultra-thin plasma/lcd/whatever. She specifically requested a 40-50" "normal" (read: rear-projection) big screen TV. So, any recommendations? Thanks! :tv:  (No :tv: and no  make mother-in-law something something...)

I've never seen one that didn't look lousy next to... well, any other sort of modern television. Including those little hand-held ones. So save some time and just get the cheapest one, then spend the extra money on a good sound system to compensate.

Whatever you get, make sure it has a built in HDTV tuner. Otherwise, I'm sure she'll be pissed in 2009 when the ol' analog doesn't tune in anymore (without an extra tuner box).
Found on Bash.org [erno] hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is.

I recommend the Sony or JVC 1080p models. We recently bought a JVC model (since it's less expensive than Sony) and it's great. Regards, Alvaro

There are four types of rear-projection TV. CRT LCD DLP H-DILA My advise is to look on CNET, Best Buy and Circuit City to get an idea of what's out there. I have a DLP TV and I love it. :)

After a brief look, that's what I was considering. Which brand/model do you have?

It doesn't matter. It's not my money. It's what she wants, so it's what she'll get.

Old people get stubbornly irrational. If at all possible when that happens it's easier to humor them than fight it. IF your family doesn't have anyone like that count your blessings. “My car gets forty rods to the hogshead, and that's the way I likes it!”

Samsung DLP is my choice. That is rear projection, but is HD. Might as well get HD so when you are forced to watch TV at mother-in-law's house at least you can enjoy it ;-) I have both a Samsung DLP (50") and Sony LCD rear projection (60"). Both are awesome while watching HD. LCD is not so good on SD broadcast [cable]. Samsung is available at Costco/Sam's Club, cant remember which. I got my [out-of-the-box/floor-model] Samsung at Circuit City for $1800 + 1/2 off the 5 year warrantee. Dispite being a floor-model I had no problems at all, and beleive this to have been an awesome deal. Perhaps this type of deal would serve m-i-l as well?
Thanks. KHadden

The other thing about my Samsung DLP is that dispite being 50", I can carry it all by myself. I weighs in at about 40 lb. M-i-l could carry it.
Thanks. KHadden

I think so. This sounds like just the thing she's looking for. Thanks for the info!

I have a Mitsubishi WD-57731 (57-inch). This is the same as the Y-57 that Circuit City sells. The only difference between the two is the Y-57 has a glossy chassis. I think they have smaller ones (50-inch) and bigger ones (65-inch).
