It is so bright that some people in Auckland contacted the emergency services fearing that a plane had fallen out of the sky. A plane? Three hours later and they think the plane is still plunging in a firey ball to the ground?

As much as I laugh at that, my parents had just rung me up wondering if it was a satellite burning up. It really is incredibly bright and the tail is 'ken huge. I'm totally in awe at the moment.

Yes, Fate is having a big laugh at me at the moment. Am ringing around trying to find others who haven't left their cameras in strange places. The one mate I have who I thought had a decent camera is down at the beach with the other comet gazers convincing Cute Young Impressionable Things that the End Is Nigh. He's a Very Bad Man :->

I'll check tomorrow, then.  I have about 8 digital cameras in the house, I'll try to take some shots.  But, I looked in every direction, and saw nothing.  And, as you say, it's not like thre's any other lights or buildings that distract or block my night sky view.  How big is it ? Should I expect more than a 5 mm spec ?

It's big - maybe a handspan and a half. People in the cafe just across the road could spot it with the street lights on.

If you send them to me I can upload them, or there's always Flickr. (Is anyone else dismayed they are remaking the movie Flicka?)

                                        cheers, Chris Maunder
