I'll check tomorrow, then. I have about 8 digital cameras in the house, I'll try to take some shots. But, I looked in every direction, and saw nothing. And, as you say, it's not like thre's any other lights or buildings that distract or block my night sky view. How big is it ? Should I expect more than a 5 mm spec ?

No problem, glad I could contribute something. FYI: The first two pictures show the side of Signal Hill with Sea Point at the bottom, the third shows Lions Head in the centre and Table Mountain on the left. Cheers, Brett
Thanks for the additional info. I was curious about the light on Lion's Head. I assume it's the last bits of sunlight.

Glad to see you're enjoying the show! :) I managed to sneek a peak at it here in MN about 2 weeks ago. You know it's one heck of a comet when you can see it and about a 1 degree tail at twilight in the middle of the city. Should you or anyone else snaps some good photos (and I would certainly say Brett's are good), you can send them to http://www.spaceweather.com[^]. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, you can still see the back end of the comet's tail from a very dark location at twilight. (Yes, the tail really is that long.) It should look like faint spikes of light at the horizon. You may need binoculars to pick it out. The Spaceweather site has a number of example photos that should give you an idea of what to look for.

I remember back a few years ago when I saw my first comet. We went outside of town a couple miles (crystal clear out there from city lights) to view a lunar eclipse which was wonderful. While standing outside the car looking at the eclipse, I happened to look up and saw Hale-Bopp. Up to that moment I thought comets were small items with a small tail. This comet, while not the brightest, was huge spanning about a quarter of the sky above. It was an awesome sight having both on the same night. Tried to view this new comet while visible from here in the USA, but it was too close to sunset to see it here in the mountains (horizon not very flat ;) ). Sure are some nice pictures!

It is so bright that some people in Auckland contacted the emergency services fearing that a plane had fallen out of the sky. :laugh: A plane? Three hours later and they think the plane is still plunging in a firey ball to the ground?
